unwaitlisting

What percentage of waitlisted students get unwaitlisted every year? Shoot. There seems to be long list of waitlisted ppl this year. My sister got into Stanford (early action). Although I have slightly better stats, I got waitlisted just because Stanford could tell that I was not as interested in the school as my sister was.

i’m interested in this as well… international waitlisted.

Very few will get in off the waitlist. But Stanford tends to take a few every year.

According to the 2005-2006 Common Data Set, 13 were admitted off the waitlist. That would be from a waitlist of probably 500-800 students.

Historically, Stanford has taken a varying number of students from the waitlist, due to a varying RD matriculation rate. Here’s a summary from previous years.

I got waitlisted, and I hate it. It’s like waiting 1 more month for decisions ¬¬

got waitlisted too. just one question, do those who got into hpy usually take themselves off or they would rather screw us over? i havent heard anything about people who would actually take their names off the list.

i got waitlisted too. i would be bummed, except that i got into yale and princeton. i dont even think i’m going to accept a spot on the waitlist. besides, i think i got waitlisted because 3 people from my school were accepted early. oh well, at least they’re letting me down easy.

“just one question, do those who got into hpy usually take themselves off or they would rather screw us over?”

I second that. If you got waitlisted for Stanford, but got into HYP, take their offer… that will make the rest of the Stanford waitlistees’ (including me) chances better by +.00001%

Students who get into a school they prefer over their waitlisted school(s) will not stay on the waitlist. There’s no reason to remain on there if you don’t want to go.

For 2001, the last available numbers, 592 students accepted a place on the waitlist out of 882 waitlistees.

The nature of the waitlist is that the admissions committee will contact you if they want to take you from the waitlist–they want to make sure you’ll come. Students would be wise to send the committee a letter expressing your continued, guaranteed desire to matriculate after being waitlisted–any new accomplishments to add would also be a big boost.

i want substantial evidence that there HAS NEVER been a case where a student has been taken off the waitlist and DID NOT attend Stanford. If there is one case like that, what zephyr151 said is completely useless.

No, that’s not necessarily true. Chances are they won’t take a kid who has shown little interest in the school–why would they?

You don’t have to send a letter. But it would probably help your chances.
