Stanford. One of the top universities in our United States of America. It was always my dream to go to Stanford, to study there and fulfill my life long goals. But looking past my perfect A’s, found one heartbreaking B in Advanced History of first semester of freshman year. My perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA had been absolutely wrecked. Everything was ruined. It had dropped to a 3.98. I’ve looked through the average GPA of a person being accepted into Stanford, and it was all 4.0’s. Though I got around a 4.6 weighted GPA (nearly the highest GPA anyone can get at our school) by taking all the AP classes offered and getting A’s in all of them, my unweighted GPA was wrecked by this one B. My perfect SAT scores, my flashing extracurriculars, none of it mattered anymore due to this one B.

Do I have any chance to get into Stanford with this terrible 3.98 unweighted GPA? Do I have any chance in being accepted into any top universities at ALL (Harvard)?

Nope, you have no chance to succeed in life, and might as well give up now, because if you think that a .02 difference in your GPA is going to ruin your life, then it WILL.

My advice: Start looking into McDonald’s career advancement opportunities. I hear that they have an excellent college called Hamburger U.

Dude, hate to break it to you, but you’re heading for unemployment and disaster in life. There are millions of applicants with 2400 SATs, who’re President of the U.S., are nationally ranked track athletes and can beat Roger Federer on Center Court in Wimbledon blindfolded, *and also bloody have a 4.0 unweighted GPA * – should’ve tried harder…my heart goes out to you.

Even if this is a joke, good satire has a base in reality. There are people, especially on CC, who think one B (freshman or sophomore year, no less) will crush them. That the only schools worth getting into are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Princeton (and if techy Caltech and MIT). Sad, but true.

Yes, to the above, that’s why I hope this thread stays alive – because hopefully someone who’s about to make a new thread just like this one would notice this one.

No offense to some perfectly intelligent individuals who may have done this, but the new trend ain’t exactly rosy: “Should I even bother applying?!”

Sigh* this is the world we live in. Honestly the middle 50% of Stanford’s acceptance don’t even have a perfect SAT/ACT and 4.0 GPA. Plus getting a 2400 SAT/36 ACT and a 4.0 doesn’t even guarantee you a spot. You can get flat our rejected while a kid with 2200 SAT and a 3.85 GPA gets accepted. Getting higher score only increases your chances, but does not guarantee you a spot.

To the Op, yup, you have no chance at this point. My S got in with 4.0 and total 50 points off all his SATs (I, and II). However, if you get another B, you might have a much better chance.:)

BTW, I do believe HYPS get certain percentage of all-rounded students each year, so try to apply if you think that you have better records compared with others.
