Unweighted GPA on Transcript

Hey everyone!

So I’m currently a sophomore, for a bit of background information. I come from an extremely competitive school and the unweighted gpa is out of 4.3 and the weighted is out of 5.0. My unweighted gpa last year was 4.2 and weighted gpa last year was 4.4. This year, my unweighted gpa is going down to a 4.0 and weighted is 4.6 (bc I had 4 AP classes). This is a bit embarrassing that it went down and I don’t want colleges to see that. I looked at my transcript and it doesn’t list unweighted gpa anywhere- only weighted for each year and cumulative weighted gpa. But, in the platform my school uses, cumulative unweighted gpa is shown. Will colleges see that unweighted gpa despite it not going on the transcript? Will I have to say it? I have no clue.

Thanks!

No

But they will see your grades. And every single AO knows basic arithmetic, so they can do whatever calculations they see fit.

Adding that with the transcript your HS will send a school profile which, among other things, details the grading system and level of courses offered. This way each transcript is reviewed in the proper context.

Although some colleges take weighted GPA at face value, others recalculate by their own method or just look at the general pattern of grades and courses holistically in context to the school. High schools calculate weighted GPA different from each other, so a face value comparison could be to your disadvantage against other applicants from high schools with heavier weighting.

Why is embarrassing? Your grades are your grades. They sound fine - and there will be many colleges for you.

Learn, get help where you struggle, and you’ll be fine. You don’t need added pressure.

Good luck.

If they see a few B’s they can deduce your unweighted gpa is below 4.0. Some of the colleges recalculate an unweighted gpa on their own for a fair comparison.

Nevertheless, you will still be competitive wherever you apply and you should try to do your best and not worry.
