Unweighted GPA? Weighted GPA?

Hi. Teen is studying the common app form so that teen will know what is needed once the application period begins. I see there is a GPA question that gives teen the option of putting weighted or unweighted GPA. Teen’s school does not provide weighted GPA but teen does have honors and/or AP classes. Is teen supposed to calculate the weighted gpa based on the type of class teen is in or does teen just put the GPA that appears on the transcript? Thanks.

If his high school does not calculate a weighted GPA, just put the unweighted GPA that is on the transcript. Some schools list both on the transcript. And some schools just use one or the other.

Use the umweighted GPA which the HS provides. Do not calculate weighted GPA.

Admissions officers will get and review the student’s entire HS transcript.

D23’s official high school transcript listed only her weighted grades. We were told to enter these official grades into the Common App and schools where grades had to be entered like Florida State and the California application. The grades in the quarterly report cards in senior year were unweighted and we entered the unweighted grades for the mid-year updates. (There wasn’t much of a difference because she only had three non-As in her four years, and none her senior year.)

Never, ever, EVER calculate a GPA on your own. Doing so can be seen as lying or trying to mislead the admissions people. Just put whatever is on your transcript. Most colleges will recalculate it anyway from the transcript send by your counselor to make all applicants equal during review so you won’t be at a disadvantage. Most schools won’t be using the GPA you put on common app.
