I was wondering if anyone could help. My school’s doing Godspell next semester, and auditions are in 4 days. They want an upbeat and a ballad and said appropriate audition material is a must. I’m guessing that means similar in style to songs in Godspell or also by Steven Schwartz, etc. I figure I’m going to do Christmas Lullaby from Songs For a New World for my ballad, but I’m really stuck with the whole upbeat thing. I’m a soprano who can do most mezzo songs as well. Please let me know if you have any suggestions!

I love Godspell! I sang We Beseech Thee in that show
Just so you know, I wouldn’t suggest any kind of Jason Robert Brown song for an audition… it’s tough to play on the piano. Stick to something a little more simple. As far as upbeat songs, try “Strongest Suit” from Aida. It’s a really fun soprano belter song that will also allow you to show some personality. For a ballad, you could try “Let’s Play a Love Scene” from FAME. It’s a very sweet song and it’s not hard to play on the keys. Hope this helps

OMG Godspell!! I sang “Light of The World” and had a “Day by Day” solo…aww memories…
*sorry–your question:
“Love Scene” from Fame, that MTgeek reccommended is a GREAT song. I use it for ALL of my auditions. I have a similar vocal range to what you described, and the song is really simple to learn for both a vocalist and an accompianist.

Uptempo-wise, not sure…I’ve used “rhythm of life” before (Sweet Charity), but that’s hard(er) to learn…hmm…“Strongest Suit” is good, you could also do “Nothing” from A Chorus Line or “Holding out For A Hero” from Footloose–good belter/attitude songs.

Best of luck! Let me know what happens!

Thanks for the advice! I ended up using “Let’s Play a Love Scene” as well as “Everything’s Alright?” from Jesus Christ Superstar. It fit my voice a little better than “Strongest Suit”. I got call backs (they want me to sing some different parts of the song “By My Side”), but unfortunately, because of the confilicts lots of people had with the date, the call backs aren’t going to be till August 21st, when school starts again. I hate having to wait this long to find out about things like this. I guess on the bright side, I have all summer to get the song perfect…

Good luck with that!

Thats a great song… I assistant directed that show last summer. I actually directed the entire prolouge myself- it was so much fun! The whole show is a blast to be a part of.
