Is it poor form/against the spirit of the arrangement for a student who is already signed to a bulge-bracket for the summer to accept an invitation to a MBB spring recruiting event?
Not a problem, given that the spring event’s purpose is to recruit for summer 2027.
It’s a small world. People often know other people in the same business. The question is why the student would want to go to another firm’s recruiting event when he/she already signed with another. What would he/she say when asked about prospects. Would the student lie?
The spring event is not recruiting for the same summer internship period, so it’s fine. The recruiting for this summer happened last fall.
It would be a problem if the student had already accepted a full time offer and was still interviewing. That’s not the situation here.
Ahhh, it wasn’t clear to me.
Just be transparent and you’ll be fine. MBB actively recruits Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright scholars; students who will fulfill their mandatory military service from their country of birth after they graduate from college; other students whose availability will be delayed. Transparency is the key. If asked “what are you doing this summer?” answer honestly. That’s all it takes. If a firm wants you, they will be prepared to wait.
I know a woman who was concerned about interviewing during her MBA program because she just found out she was pregnant. She told her MBB recruiting contact as soon as she (and her doctor) felt it was ok to let people know. The firm was totally cool about it- told her that if she got to the offer stage, they’d pull out a calendar and figure out the when.
Good luck to your kid!!!
