Hello everyone, about a year ago I made a post on here explaining how my parent’s financial issues made us ineligible for a lot of government loans and assistance for school, and that I didn’t have many options, and that I was likely going to end up at my local CC. You can find the post in my post history. I thought i’d give a little update to show that going to CC isn’t always that bad, and to just give an update to my old post.
I ended up enrolling in the CC in January of my senior year. I received a full ride scholarship to the CC, and admittance to the honor’s program. I actually registered for courses and began taking classes in the spring semester, and did summer and fall as well. I just finished my 3rd semester, and have my graduation ceremony tomorrow.
I was able to graduate in 3 semesters because of my numerous AP credits, so I basically skipped all the gen eds and only take the major-specific courses. I also took a few other fun courses(dance, painting, etc ) I finished with a 4.0 in Biology.
I’ve achieved a lot of things in my short time there, I got to travel abroad on a full travel grant to attend an environmentalism conference, I founded my CC’s speech and debate team, I’ve been working as a research assistant at my state’s flagship university, etc. Going to a CC doesn’t mean you don’t have an opportunity to do great things, you just have to find the opportunities and make them happen yourself.
However, the achievement i’m most proud of is that I received an almost full tuition scholarship to a college in Canada, the University of British Columbia. I was shocked to receive so much aid from them. So, I am moving to Vancouver in about 4 weeks. I’m going to be studying Earth and Ocean sciences, and minoring in environmental education. I couldn’t be more excited about this.
Overall, i’m so glad I decided to wait and go to a CC. I was so tempted to just go to a small cheap college in Texas just so that I wouldn’t miss out on the “college experience”, even though I knew it wasn’t what I really wanted. It just goes to show that going to a CC isn’t inherently bad, it is what you make of it.

Sincerely, congrats and enjoy Vancouver!
