Update to "Playboy kid with senioritis making me really nervous" aka The Benefits of Comm. Collegege

I was looking through “my threads” today, and saw and read through this old thread, linked below. Wow, brings back…uh, memories. And reminds me how helpful College Confidential has been in this entire journey. I think it could be really helpful to parents in a similar situation to share an update.

The title of that previous thread says it all. I was struggling with whether or not to “invest” in my kid with an expensive four year college given his crazy ways while a senior in high school. He’s a bright kid, but a party animal and seemed to always do as little as possible to succeed. At the end of that thread/period of time he had decided to attend UC Riverside, which was “the best” school he had gotten into. That was May 1, 2017.

Fast forward three years. A LOT changed. By the end of June that year, my son changed his mind about going to UCR, and decided to stay home and attend Community College (cc). There could’ve been no better choice for him! I’ll share his current status and some of his successes, in part to reassure parents of kids like mine, but also to make the pitch for Community College (cc) which is the perfect choice for many bright kids with great potential.

My son is currently waiting on admissions decisions from several colleges and universities. He has already been offered acceptance to some great schools that are among the top in his major (according to USNWR), Chemical Engineering, including numbers 4, 10 and 12! Here are some highlights of the opportunities he got in cc and his successes:

4.0 GPA in almost 90 semester units
Completed honors program- including honors composition- writing had been a weakness
Will receive four Associate’s degrees - math, physics, chemistry and biology
Completed all lower division major coursework and general education
Participated in a paid research project in his field at a University of California one summer
Received three non-need based scholarships for this year, totaling $1750…
Works as paid tutor for math (all levels) and chemistry (all levels); tutors physics too
Embedded tutor for organic chemistry - paid position
Worked as server for catering company making great money
Hopes for/half expects a paid internship this summer in pharmaceutical industry
Top candidate for chemistry scholarship from his cc to take with him to 4-year
Selected as student of the year at his school for American Chemistry Society
Tutors a professor’s son for money (how many other students could’ve been asked?)
Tutors friends in math and chemistry
Taught “Putting the Stud in Student” on study habits for success for STEM students
Did his own laundry much of the time
Prepared all his own meals except dinner
Had a really nice girlfriend for a year and a half
Managed a breakup kindly and with resilience
Managed and completed all of his own college applications and all that goes with it
Developed stellar work habits, and enjoyed partying and time with friends when possible
Exhibits good coping skills, e.g. during this COVID stuff goes running regularly
Continues to love learning
Still crazy
Still drives mom crazy
WAY better - I haven’t killed him yet

I hope this update encourages people who may have a kid like mine. I also hope it opens some eyes on the benefit of community college. Think of the money saved while all this maturity and success happened! I should add that had he gone away to school, he may have had equal success, however, he would’ve been more tempted by the party scene, and who knows which way that would’ve gone, and he may not have had the access to professors that he’s had that opened many of these doors. Also, while all his school choices from three years ago were great, and one can be wildly successful no matter what school they go to, he will end up at a higher tier school now (which is important to him), AND he will end up at a school that is chosen because of their reputation for his major.

Best of luck to everyone in their upcoming decisions. Please include community college among your choices!

Thanks for providing an update. Very happy to hear your son is excelling. Nice ray of sunshine to read about his achievements.

WOW !! Love this post, and love the kid.

Thanks for the update!

Love reading your update - my S20 is not a party guy but has not been terribly invested in the college process, and while very bright didn’t want to study for the SAT and has a mix of As and Bs in school. So he has planned on community college in California for 2 years and I’m hoping he will mature and be truly invested when it comes time to transfer.

Congrats to your son!

Fabulous!!! Congrats to your son, well done!

Great list, love the inclusion of laundry and cooking and breaking up nicely.

One of mine came back from a 4 year LAC and did community college for awhile. The support was great. I also know some who did two year vocational training and never looked back.

So glad to hear that he is thriving! Community colleges are so a great option for many, especially in California. Thanks for the update!

OMG, that was three years ago!

I’m very happy to hear your S’s progress. Congratulations!

My D is still crazy, too!

She keeps partying all right but she is taking her study seriously, too, so all is good.

One summer when she came home, she used her fake ID to get a drink at a local bar. A few days later, my H happened to drop by at the same bar and the bartender asked if he had a daughter who lives in East coast. (We have a very memorable last name.) He said yes, and the age discrepancy came to light and my H was very disappointed that she had a fake ID!!

So far, she hasn’t ended up in ER or at a jail. I take it as a good sign.

She is not taking this pandemic isolation very well. She is a people person and she NEEDS to have her friends around.

Another thing that is making her miserable is that she broke up with her first boyfriend at the end of February or early March.

And then all her friends who were studying abroad started to call in crying from Europe.

And then in the airplane coming home, she was treated badly by a fellow passenger and a flight attendant (maybe) because she is Asian.

And then she realized that her 21st birthday will happen in the middle of the isolation and she cannot celebrate it with her friends.

And probably her summer job at college campus will not happen.

And the meal she cooked for us went pretty bad. (She was talking to her friend on the phone all through the cooking so she mismeasured the ingredients…)

Her mood is really like a roller coaster right now.

Overall she has been doing good for the past years, but sadly, it’s a trying time for her now. (And I’m sure for everybody, too.)

I wish all the good things for my fellow CC kids and parents!

My d is another kid who went to CC. She was asked to leave private HS after JR year due to frequent and frequent prolonged absences due to a chronic health condition.

After considering the options, we supported her choice to take GED and attend CC. After her 1st semester there, she applied to transfer at the competitive private U her brother attended and was admitted to start after completing 3 semesters of CC. She received her degree and felt CC was helped her make the best of a tough situation.

So glad your S has had such stellar results from CC.

All of my kids took classes at our local county college during high school (took classes on the cc campus) and it was a postitive experience for all of them.

One of them ended up receiving an assoc in nursing. She earned 90 credits by the time she graduated and then went on to earn her BSN at a 4 year college. She says that most of her co-workers have debt from attenging a 4 year college for nursing. She had no debt (we paid - but by spending 3 years at a county college, we saved buckets of money). It also allowed her to remain active in our community doing what she loved. It was hands down the best option for her.
