OK…so my refund has been deposited…I think this means that I can now link to the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, right?
So…this is my daughter’s FAFSA (she is independent but parent info is required by her school). What exactly do,we do? Go back into the FAFSA…and then what?
I haven’t ever used the DRT, and I haven’t updated a FAFSA in seven years!
It will walk you through it. You just go to the page where it gives you a choice of “will file” or “have filed.” Change your answer to “have filed” (or whatever the wording is) and it will offer you a link to the DRT.
After you have logged in and selected make a correction, if you’ve answered “no” to all of the DRT eligibility questions you should see a button appear that says “link to IRS”.
Thanks! Our taxes were actually complete when we completed the FAFSA. But we could not link to the DRT at that time. All we want to do is link to the DRT now. I’m guessing that doing so will be obvious…and easy…
I honestly thought (hoped) that I was done with the FAFSA once this kid got her bachelors…but NO!
-Once you are in the form, click on the “Financial Information” tab at the top of the screen.
-Go to the “Parent Tax Information” page. If the DRT is available to you, you will see three questions and a link to the DRT at the bottom of the page.
-Page ahead to the “Student Tax Information” page. Again, if the DRT is available to you, you will see three questions and a link to the DRT at the bottom of the page.
Did the steps suggested above. It all went very smoothly. Just an FYI, when you link, it does. Take you out if the FAFSA site and into the IRS site. But then you return to the FAFSA to sign and submit.
I have to say…this DRT is very nice! I wish I had just waited until it was available instead of filling in the blanks myself (with exactly the same numbers).
