Upper Middle Class Struggling with Inflation

Yes, they listed inflation rates of various items to justify the rate increase. They were shockingly high. If you follow their numbers, the increase is justified. Prices are going up fast. For a dozen eggs, I paid about $5 last week. The same brand, in case anyone wants to question, about $6 this week. No, it was not on sale last week if anyone’s curious mind wants to question.

I wouldn’t complain about the increased tax in an inflation thread if it is due to changed circumstances, as in changed from unimproved to improved. Of course, tax goes up from an empty lot to a lot with a shiny new house on it. That is not comparing apples to apples. Underlying assumption here, spoken or unspoken, would be about the inflation. You wouldn’t complain that car prices got doubled while upgrading from a beat up Honda to a Lexus, would you? If you do, that’s is misleaiding at best or a lie.
Yes, it is still a small amount and I am not freaking out either way. Just pointing out the shock of inflation.

In any measure inflation is up. I think that social security is saying 8.9% this year.

It is not up 80% anywhere. Maybe post World War I in Germany. But not here.

Let’s not overstate inflation.

No, not everything is 80%, of course not. Just my tax or more accurately, tax of everyone in my town. Again, I have clarify. It is a PROPOSED increase not real yet.

A 0.07% property tax rate is among the lowest I have ever seen. Perhaps it would give some more context, if you posted your county or general region.

This was the original post. But now you are saying it’s a proposed tax hike?

I’m going to speak for everyone, we are all confused.

I wonder why this is part of a topic about inflation when you seem to be reluctant to discuss why your property taxes are increasing. If it’s a product of inflation or another reason.

Yes, that was the original post. A few posts down, I corrected it is proposed increase not the actual. Is that such a big deal? I realized late that I left that out. One of the reasons is often when they propose, it sticks. It may go down a bit after the public hearing. Going down a bit from 80% is still very high. Proposing 80% increase citing inflation belongs to an inflation thread, doesn’t it? If not, contact the moderator and have them delete.

Igloo- our confusion is that a bill means “Pay this now”. Anything else- means something else. We’re all just trying to understand. I get mailings from my town all the time- proposed increase to the sewer charge, increase in the citation fee if you park in the snow zone before a blizzard, blah blah blah. But they aren’t bills- yet- because the proposals haven’t gone through. Unless I’m in a particularly civic minded mood- I read and toss! You can probably do the same to your proposed increase!!!

That’s crazy. We just went to lunch for two at local Mexican place the other day and it was about $25 before tip. Granted we got water and a soda to drink.

Yeah I really like the Mexican places around me. They actual work out comparable price to fast food places if not less. Indian too.

Yikes! One burger?! :hushed:

Well…it was a mushroom/Swiss/bacon burger…and it was delicious. And the eggplant fries were an up charge well worth it!

Not surprised that restaurant dining has gotten significantly more expensive, since the exodus of restaurant labor resulting in restaurants needing to pay significantly higher level of pay (often greater than the $15 per hour that used to be a minimum wage pipedream among some left-leaning political activists) has been a significant driver of inflation (though not the only one).

Our lunch out today:

One huge chorizo taco salad

One plate of two tacos filled with steak (not ground beef) + other taco stuff, refried beans, side salad

One basket of french fries with vinegar on the side

One 16.9 oz Mt Dew

One bottle of Jarritos Tamarind soda

$10 tip

Total including tip - $33.21

No prep, no dishes.

I’m fine with it. The food is delicious there. When I’m not working and we’re not traveling, it’s practically always our Wednesday lunch.

Inflation hasn’t been a particular “struggle” for me, but I have seen many increases in nominal prices/rates this year. Some specific numbers are below, for nominal price/rate increases. I tried to limit to increases I primarily associate with inflation, rather than increased prices in general. For example, gas prices have increased, but I do not primarily associate that increase as caused by inflation (I do think gas prices are a key driver for inflation and cost increases of some of products below).

CD Rates – Up from 1-2% to 3-4% (>100% increase)

Netflix – 71% increase over 6 month period from April to October (I pay in TL)

I Bonds – 35% increased rate to 9.62% for May-October period

Fruit – A lot of variation by week, fruit I buy is typically ~20-30% higher, and all sellers show a significant increase

Rotisserie Chicken – 20-30% increase at local supermarket, less at certain other supermarkets, no change at Costco

Milk – 30% increase at nearest supermarket, less at most others. Typical 10-30% increase

Frozen Foods – Variable, typical is 10-30% increase

Restaurants – I don’t eat out much, but most places I do visit show show a significant increase and/or reduced portions. As an example of the latter, Dominos still offers their $7.99 for large deal, but they switched from 3 toppings to 1 topping.

Upper middle class is entry level of affluence and always getting squeezed from all sides.

If you lived in the lower class, you would think middle class was affluent. It’s all relative.

My lunch today was McDonald’s McDouble & Small Fry $3.62. I bring soda from home to work. I’ll snack on some trail mix if I get hungry.

This was my splurge as I have been bringing my lunch. I never go out to a sit down restaurant for lunch. Probably like 10 times in the last 7-8 years. To me it is a waste of money.

My Dad worked construction and brought his lunch everyday and a thermos of coffee. He would never stop a gas station for snacks.

It is hard sometimes to get rid of those habits you grew up with. It is also the main reason I will never do Doordash or UberEats. I can’t make myself have a $10-15 meal turn into $25 because I am too lazy to go get it.

I have seen increases, but my philosophy at the grocery store is we are buying what is on sale that week.

I had a grocery run a couple of weeks ago where the regular price for everything totaled $169. Then between the sale prices and the special deals/coupons on the store app the total became $99.

I will say sometimes it makes coming up with what to make for dinner easier because the store is doing it for you.
