UPS lost my daughter's passport

We sent my daughter’s passport overnight for delivery on Wednesday. (She needs to get a visa from the British consulate for her upcoming trip to London.)

Apparently the truck from Boston to NYC was late and the package didn’t get out on Wednesday. It was rescheduled for Friday delivery.

Friday the package made it to NYC but then the trail grows cold.

UPS put a trace on it this morning (they will not do this until the status has not been updated for 24 hours). Nothing further will be done until Monday. The package will not be declared officially lost until 8 business days later (December 7th).

If the passport is lost, she will also need to have her biometrics redone for the visa.

Daughter will not return to the Boston area until December 22 (at least, that is the current plan).

I am not too concerned about replacing the passport (I know we can do it here in Boston in 24 hours if needed), but I am not sure she will be able to get the visa done in time (also not the end of the world, as she needs it for her planned internship but could still spend her semester in London without it).

Anyone have any success in UPS finding a lost package? Any war stories appreciated…

The letter sized package possibly got mis-sorted at the NYC hub. This happens occasionally. I’m betting that the package arrives to you next week sometime. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

Thank you!

I just spoke to the person at the UPS Store about this.

He claims that they find things more often than not.

Hopefully this will be true in our case.

Has it turned up yet??

First thing Monday morning I checked the status which was “out for delivery”!

My daughter received confirmation from the British Consulate today that they had received it.

So it all sorted itself out.

Phew!

I learned from this that I am a pessimist, because I immediately started planning for the worst.

Thanks jshain for posting, because I can imagine that the scenario you suggested is what happened.

I was in the tuxedo wholesaling business for 25 years before retiring in 2008. We shipped tuxedos all over the country. I am hard-pressed to remember more than a couple of incidents where UPS permanently lost a shipment. They really do a great job, considering how many packages they handle. The problem with shipping tuxedos is Monday arrival is TOO LATE (since most weddings occur on a Saturday)!

I only ship important packages via FedEx. You can follow along every single step of the way if you like.

You can follow every step along the way with UPS as well.

Of course this is the worst time of year to mail something. We debated if we should wait until after the Thanksgiving holiday, but decided against it.

The biometrics data expires if the consulate doesn’t receive it within 2 weeks, so fortunately we didn’t wait until after the holiday as we would have lost a week which wouldn’t have left much margin for carrier error.

This is one of those theads that I am glad I read the bottom posts before the first ones ! My heart was in my throat even whenI knew the good outcome!!! Glad all is well.

You aren’t a pessimist in my books! I think just savvy and prudent to hope for the best and plan for the worst…exactly what you did. Glad it worked out fine!

“savvy and prudent to hope for the best and plan for the worst.” - Yep!

Thanks, I am very relieved to say the least!

Also, my daughter did not have a meltdown, which I thought might happen.
