Urg, it makes no sense! I think.

I was looking online at NYU, and it said:
The Class of 2011 (entering Fall 2007) is made up of 4,395 students, 25.4% of which were early decision candidates. The middle 50% of SAT scores for the Class of 2011 fell between a 1300 and a 1430 while the middle 50% of ACT scores were between 29 and 31. The average High School GPA was a 3.63 and 70% of incoming students were in the top 10% of their class.
But on CC, when I asked what my chances where, with a 1940 SAT, 3.8 UW URM, first generation to go to university, they said it was still a reach. Its not that I don’t want to accept it, it’s just that I want to know why it was such a high reach, if I have better stats than most of the entering class.
BTW, I might go with the Stern school of business. I think it might influence it, but if I didnt apply for Stern, would I have a better shot? Or, what are my shots of getting into Stern?

First of all, when it says that the average SAT score is a 1300+, it means only counting Math and Critical Reading. Writing is not included. Your scores are still low in comparison.

For instance, my 2220 (750CR, 710Math, 760Writing) is a “1460”

your ECs are good, however

Stern has an acceptance rate of about 23% (Source: NYU rep), which is much more selective than the other NYU colleges. It’s ranked one of the top 5 business programs in the U.S.

From personal experience, one of my friends got into NYU with a 1900 SAT (he later bragged that SATs really didn’t matter) and one got into Stern with a 2000 SAT score. But then again, he did internships with businesses in foreign countries. If you are thinking of applying to Stern, you should show some ECs with interest in business.

I assume you’ll be applying to NYU Stern as the class of '13. The class of '11 was two years ago, and I’m not sure if you have heard or have known, but college admissions for last year and probably this year as well have been/are going to be extremely tough and selective.

Here’s a possibly scenario: With Harvard, and a lot of the other Ivies rejecting more applicants, meaning the acceptance percentage has gone down, most of these top students will be attending other colleges that might not be on top of their list. So they might be accepted and attending NYU instead of HYPSM. So effectively, they are “taking” your spot. Also, just because you have the stats it doesn’t necessarily mean it would be a match. The applicant pool at NYU and other selective colleges are self selecting, meaning that everyone has great stats, and it really comes down to the smaller things/EC’s that would get one accepted. Your status as the first person to go to a university might be somewhat of a hook, so that’s why in my opinion it would be a reach instead of a high reach. Especially if you want to go to NYU Stern, which is one of the best business schools in the country.

I hope I don’t sound like a jerk, I just wanted to try and explain why it might not be a match for you.

thank you so much. Jchen, you dont sound like a jerk at all. It clarifies things alot. Hmm, the SAT thing it s bit misleading, haha, hopefully I am not the only person it has happened to. Yea, I don’t have really any EC’s that deal with business directly, but I don’t think many other high school applicants do. IDK if this is possible, but can I apply as an undeclared for a year, over the summer from my freshman to sophomore year do an internship, then apply to Stern either second or third year. Is that possible? Or, would it help at all?
