Urgent unrefundable housing payment for year?

I saw somewhere that once you apply for housing and send your 200 in you must pay for the whole year, as in you cant back out? what if a college accepts you off a waitlist, then surely you cannot be held accountable to pay for the whole year’s housing to UNC right?

I think you lose the enrollment deposit and the housing deposit, but only become possibly liable for a housing bill if you do not notify them you are not enrolling before the dorms open.

Per housing site:

“August - Residence halls open for new first-year students.
The Application becomes the Contract when the residence halls officially open or when students accept the room key, whichever is earlier. Contract cancellation after the residence halls officially open may result in pro-rated room rent charges and one-half of the semesters rent.”
