what is the difference between a URM and a ORM? ive always wondered because isnt a minority just a minority? like im a minority but I have no clue which one i fall into. my dad is white and my mom is west indian- not indian west indian

An over-represented minority is something like an Asian, who are discriminated at top schools and many others because so many apply and most have stellar records.

A URM is like an African-American, or Native American Indian, who do not apply to prep schools/college in the same kind of droves that Asians and whites do, and therefore are rarer to add diversity to a school.

I would say that you are probably a URM (not an expert opinion by any means though), if you are not referring to the actual country of India.

if you’re west indian of african descent, I think you would be a urm.

URM (10 chars)

URM, includes persons of african descent even if mixed race. Also, your grouping (children and/or grandchildren of african or west indian immigrants and traditional african americans of mixed race) of URMs is known to do well academically at elite colleges and universities. These URMs represent the most populous group of black students attending elite colleges. Of course they had to have the grades, rigorous curriculum and test scores to get admitted. This data was studied at Harvard several years ago.
