The kid interviewed said he was “assigned” a project using Jingle Bells and about the KKK? If that’s true, that could only go poorly.
The article says the assignment was to select a history event and make a jingle with it. Alternative assessments are increasingly popular (though I personally don’t like them).

No. They were to create a jingle about the Reconstruction period. Not use “Jingle Bells” (necessarily).
And the KKK was a sad but large part of the Reconstruction. So as I see it the kids did the assignment. I’m only wondering how it was graded…
It was a stupid assignment. Why can’t teachers just teach any more?
It can work. When Hamilton comes to town they put on a special daytime performance for public high school kids (at cost) in conjunction with their social studies or APUSH classes. Lots of alternative assignments have come from that EduHam program that have been truly amazing, and the best ones get to perform after the main show finishes.
I’m trying to imagine this…4 groups get up and do their jingles. This group gets up sings their “Jingle Bells” and the teacher is sitting there thinking “I really didn’t see this coming…”
