Why do you keep asking that?

I agree with the basic idea about there being a difference between going to Wisconsin and going to the cream of the crop schools like HYPS, but Wisconsin is still very good, on par with Dartmouth and with more name recognition that Carnegie Mellon. While those schools aren’t “great,” they’re all very good.

I agree with Gentleman, Wisconsin is on par with community colleges in the U.S.

It’s not as good as all the community colleges but wisconsin can hold its own against most of them.

I think this is what gentleman and barrons are getting to here.

I wouldn’t call Carnegie Mellon a community college, but I won’t argue with you if that’s the position that you’re taking.

You’re totally right, Wisconsin is a community college.

Wait, now you’re confusuing me, because if Wisconsin is a communtity college, but Wisconsin is more prestigious than Carnegie Mellon, then what does that say about CMU?

Hilarious thread.

Agreed, I think Wisconsin is a community college as well. Its about as ridiculous as saying Wisconsin is on par with Dartmouth.

Hmm…if Wisconsin and Carnegie Mellon are community colleges, what does that make Deep Springs?
A mere kibbutz, I guess. :p

hahhhaaha :)

“Its about as ridiculous as saying Wisconsin is on par with Dartmouth.”

It’s also less ridiculous than saying Harvard is a community college.

Dartmouth? The school whose students go to bed at night thanking god that they have some sort of teneous connection to Harvard and Yale, because if it wasn’t for that connection nobody would know or care even the slightest bit about them? That Dartmouth? The one that’s know for its stellar…uh…jeez, what is it known for again? Oh that’s right, its in the IVY league. Yeah, maybe it is ridiculous to compare it to Wisconsin.

Wow… can one get any more pretentious than that?

You must be confusing Dartmouth with U Penn. Seriously, if Penn took the phrase “Ivy League” and “first” out of their viewbook, the size would decrease by half.

http://www.classroomedition.com/pdfs/wsj_college_092503.pdf
(Also, Dartmouth is extremely strong in classics and archaeology :))

People who go to lesser prestigious colleges can do one of a number of things:

Live with it and try and achieve regardless.

Try and “upgrade” next time and attend a top tier grad school (a friend of mine from Wharton b-school went to undergrad at Providence College and he NEVER EVER mentions the fact that he went to PC but he throws down the fact that he went to Wharton in every other sentence as if it is going out of style in such a regular fashion he puts Donald Trump to shame)

Live in their own dream world and convince people on the world of College Confidential that [ fill in the blank State U ] is the best thing since sliced bread and better than the Ivies - which they continue to argue is totally overrated

Of course the sheer irony here is if Ivies are so overrated and not worthy of such prestige, why do they keep trying to compare themselves to something so overrated and not worthy of such prestige?

Answer?

Ivies = prestige.
State U = does not.

Very simple.

Slipper, is Wisconsin as prestigious as Dartmouth? In most educated circles, most probably not (although Engineers and Scientists would probably disagree). However, Wisconsin isn’t far behind the top 20 universities in terms of prestige and, in educated circles, it is highly respected. I would say without hesitation that Wisconsin is a top 30 university in the nation.

Ivies(HYP)=prestige
Ivies(not HYP)=just along for the ride aka piggybacking

very simple indeed

In that equation, then State U. = Homer Simpson’s Special Achievers Camp

Universal law, obviously.
