US NEWS 2007 Predictions

“Notre Dame … is it that good?”
academically? no, but somehow it manages to make top 20 every year.

Notre Dame is one of those schools that’s perpetually overranked in USNWR, but because they aren’t ranked ahead of Stanford or MIT, they don’t catch nearly as much flak for it as Duke and Penn do.

hmmm,

This tentative list that Kenyon recently posted (not a knock on Kenyon at all - just my observation) kind of confirms (for me) that the USNWR is really just a kind of subjective list after the Top 15 (or so) which pretty much any “orangutan” (shout out to Alexandre) can put together. After that, it’s really kind of potluck it seems to me.

Take for instance Notre Dame which is ranked no. 19. Now I’ve never really thought much about the Fighting Irish except for the fact that they had an incredible football season this past year and Charlie Weis has done a magnificent job turning that program around (watch for them to make major waves next year). At any rate, I know they are a decent academic school but Top 20?

Just take a look at the schools that USNWR ranks below ND:

Vanderbilt

Emory
Georgetown

Carnegie Mellon
Tufts

UCLA

University of Virginia
Wake Forest

Michigan
UNC

William and Mary
USC

I’d argue that most (if not all) of those schools are better than ND (academically).

I think Penn, Duke and Wash U will remain around where they are. There’s no reason that they’re going to drop these three schools by that much.

I haven’t really heard much about many of the lower Ivies. (For example, U Penn. I hadn’t heard of it until they sent me a brochure post-PSAT.)

Most people have only heard of HYP.

I’ve heard of Dartmouth. I’ve never just related Dartmouth with the Ivy League.

Right, because an athletic affiliation means anything? Some of the lower Ivies are not THAT good nor famous, and to even think that “well-educated” Americans would even care about what they are is ridiculous.

None taken. But I must point out I have lived abroad since one of my parents teaches, and let’s just say nobody has heard of Dartmouth abroad. Dartmouth is a good school; it just doesn’t have much name-recognition.

The Ivies do all know each other and its a network. I was out last night and 3/4 of the people were Ivy grads. Its perhaps bad but the extended network surely exists.

The “lower Ivies” impress Ivy grads and that matters more than any other network in the world.

kenyon’s list is wrong. There is no way they are dropping Penn like that.

Gee, Nobody else does that.

From the Illinois Alum site: Big Ten Happy Hour, at the Boat Basin Cafe

somehow i just can’t believe that kenyon’s dad works for usnews, knows the rankings not due out for 5-6 months, and just gave them to his son to post on the internet.

My point exactly. You have your bigten happy hour and I’ll take the Ivy one. Quality of the network is what matters, not its existance.

slipper, u went to that last night?, u see any cornell grads or were they not in attendance

Fine with us.

IvyGrad is right about Notre Dame… not better than any of the schools ranked from 20-28… except maybe Wake and CM
… according to Kenyons BS list

And for LAC’s:

I sooo believe that list /sarcasm.

Does it count if you have to tell people you’re being sarcastic? BTW, I think the three oos would’ve been enough to tip us off.

Yes it counts. You never know online. Better safe than sorry.

Check out the Umich argument thread for examples when sarcasm was unnoticed :)

Patriot League schools should improve in National LAC ranking. Holy Cross had a 41% increase in applications this year and the school is offering more merit aid. Also Colgate and Bucknell are very popular.

OH, the exquisite irony. So it turns out that the President of Dartmouth–that exclusive Ivy you know–is a graduate of ---------------------The University of Wisconsin–BS, PhD.

I guess he’ll be having a beer with his fellow Big Ten alums next time he’s in NYC.
