In the latest US News Best Colleges 2026 rankings, in addition to being named a Top 20 Best National University (at #20), Carnegie Mellon also ranked as the No. 1 school for 7 disciplines as follows below:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software Engineering
  • Analytics
  • Programming Languages
  • Information Systems
  • Mobile/Web Apps

Twelve additional specialties ranked in the top 5, giving CMU a total of 19 that placed fifth or higher.

These specialties like AI and Cybersecurity makes more sense for graduate rankings. It is a bit weird to have an undergraduate ranking for AI with some schools (like CMU, Purdue) which have an undergraduate AI major alongside schools (UIUC, UC Berkeley) which don’t.
