US News Ranking - AP Tests

In the Top 100 Gold Medal Schools, I noticed a school I may go to is #33. The AP participation rate is 100%, however, the AP pass rate is 59.7%. What the hell is up with that?
These surprisingly odd numbers are confusing.

  1. Does this mean that every kid in the school takes AP classes to the full extent, or what exactly is this 100% AP participation rate saying?
  2. I can’t even comprehend this failing grade…I’m thinking kids are failing their classes or the AP exam or…? Are a lot of kids failing classes…?
I have no clue about this and it’s really weird. Could you guys clear it up by answering these questions and adding a tid-bit to make this more understandabe, thanks.

-G

100% AP participation rate means that everyone in the school has taken at least 1 AP class.

The AP pass rate may be so low that the school requires their students to take AP tests even when they don’t want to.

If you want a clear answer to this question, look up the guidance office of that school you are looking at and their policy on AP classes.

Ah…now that makes sense. Thanks.

You’re gonna go to Highland Park? I saw that school on the HBO Documentary Film Resolved. It was partly about a debate team from that school that won the TOC.

Yeah, maybe. It’s really a big blurr right now. I’m in the middle of moving to three places…HP, Corona Del Mar, or Newport Beach. Or I may stay here.
Complicated.

Btw, I couldn’t find the reason for the AP failure thing. Didn’t see guidance office at all. Help?
