I’m a US student seriously considering applying to several British universities for 2015. The problem is that I’m kind of in a strange situation and I really don’t know what my chances are.

SAT Scores:
740 Critical Reading
640 Math
640 Writing (8 on the essay)
Total of 2020

ECs:
Ballet: I am a serious ballet dancer (despite the fact I am male :P) and currently study under Alexander Boitsov (Former principle dancer at the Mariinskiy and won the Narodnyy Artist USSR award). I’ve been dancing for many years now and really love it.

Tae Kwon Do: I have been practising the Chung Do Kwon style of Tae Kwon Do for over half my life and earned my first degree black belt at 13. At one point I also helped to found a local Tae Kwon Do school.

That’s mostly it for ECs. I also volunteer at a local organic farm every summer and I used to fence but that’s pretty much it. If you count foreign languages, I am fluent in French and pretty darn close in Russian. I studied abroad in France for a summer.

High School GPA: 3.9

APs:
Now here’s where it gets weird. I never took any AP classes.

Additional:
I graduated from high school in two years and entered the undergraduate program at West Chester University in Pennsylvania immediately (I’d been taking classes there for fun since I was 12). I’ve been there as a full time student for a year (I just turned 17) and am currently on track to get a BA in Russian Studies. That’s not my plan though. Instead I’d like to apply to more prestigious universities, preferably abroad. As I am such an oddball, however, I have no idea if I’ll get in.

My eventual goal, by the way, is to be a freelance translator in either French or Russian specialising in translating economic stuff like 10Qs.

Where I plan on applying:
Pretty much everywhere. I’d love to get into the London School of Economics, but I think its unlikely. My safety is the Uni of Ediburgh as I’m pretty sure I could get in there.

Hi thanks for chancing me! I’d like to help you out but I know literally nothing about British schools and wouldn’t want to mislead you. Sorry.

However, I can say that being a serious male ballet dancer is an incredibly unique trait which will definitely help with regards to admission. Good luck!

So thanks for chancing me man, To start your SATS look pretty darn good. Im not familiar with international schools. But reading what you wrote i can say I was thoroughly impressed! aha wish i had the scores you had and i think you have chance, Hell id even say you can make it!

Your ECs are quite weak in number but they do show passion, which is a really good thing. I don’t know anything about British universities but I know that test scores are important, along with GPA, in any school. Your SAT score looks pretty fine and above average to me but your GPA - is it weighted or unweighted? If it is weighted then you should work on it. If unweighted, then great job! Good luck!

@hichristen: have you read the profile at all? o_O OP is a serious dancer.

@OP:
British universities don’t care about GPAs and rarely about SAT’s. They care about AP scores or SAT Subject scores. Your best bet is to register for AP exams and/or SAT subjects (yes I know you already took college classes but I’m not sure those “count” for your admission) in subjects you are strong in - French, Russian, and at least two others.

You could still apply for Fall 2014 since UCAS accepts “late” applications.
Through UCAS, you can apply to 5 programs (within a single school, or 5 different schools, or any combination you choose). Then you can NCH which is linked to UCL and is more interdisciplinary.

Will you expect to keep on with dance?
Typically EC’s don’t really matter to University admissions but being a serious dancer could certainly help, depending on the school. Will you apply to dance schools in the UK, too?

@MYOS1634 Yes I plan to continue with dance. I could pretty easily work as a professional dancer if I wanted to (in particular I am very friendly with Boston ballet). However, that’s not something I’m interested in. Ballet dancers have a tough life. For me, it’s more of an overly obsessive hobby (or even way of life!), not a career.

Lol, everyone seems to think I’ve chanced myself! XD If that is true then I would be very happy. Thanks to all who replied, even if you arent familiar with foreign schools. :)

Unfortunately, you can’t apply “everywhere”. You can apply to a handful of schools through CommonApp (Sciences Po in France, and St Andrews in Scotland, plus a couple others in the UK) but on UCAS you can only apply to 5 programs. That means 2 different majors at one university, 1 major at three different universities. The majors are binding.
None of the chances above make sense because they’re looking at GPA, EC’s, etc… whereas in the UK they recruit based on AP or SAT Subject scores and you haven’t provided any.

Yes, since that’s what admissions are based on.
Not for Sciences Po, I think they take the SAT and GPA + proof of French language (TFE, I think, or AP?.. you could take AP French and kill two birds with one stone.)

Oh man, sorry OP! I didn’t notice that you were male. That makes it even better for your ballet. That’s incredibly unique. Sorry! I didn’t really read so much into it.
