A university teacher in the U.S. state of Nevada has come under fire after he posted on social media that his classroom is not a “safe space” and he would report any students who are in the country illegally to authorities.
Good. Not his job. Blast away.
He says he’s “forced to report”
By whom?
I would he determine who is legal and who is illegal. This is huge issue at my sons school since they have a large hispanic population. If illegals can get into public universities how do you report them once you have allowed them to enroll.
“forced to report”?
Actually, FERPA, and thus the university, requires the professor not to share students’ educational records with any one.
@Grainraiser , so the students are “illegals”? Never mind the fact that in all likelihood that have lived most of their lives in the USA and are probabaly completely Americanized. I will not blame any student who was brought to this country by his or her parents. It’s wrong.
Are Dreamers typically considered in the category of illegals in this context?
“Are Dreamers typically considered in the category of illegals in this context?”
If you mean undocumented Students subject to DACA (Defered Action for Childhood Arrivals) the answer is yes. Don’t forget the DREAM act never passed. Instead you have DACA which was an executive order that can be undone with the stroke of a pen. Very scary for people who had no choice in coming here.
How has he been in education without learning about FERPA?
This Prof made a very stupid decision in openly saying all that.
By broadcasting his intentions like that, even if he can’t feasibly do it due to practical or possible legal considerations, the message to many students, especially immigrants/Americans who “look foreign” he’s likely to have/be assigned*, “I can’t be trusted to not act on my personal prejudices in sicking law enforcement on you lowly students”.
And with that, he deep-sixed his best chances of building any trustful rapport with students critical in being a GOOD EDUCATOR.
- If he teaches one or more sections of a required core requirement and all other sections have been filled.
He apparently has retracted the statements and contends they were made in jest:
I think he is sorry because he may have tanked his career
Lately, lots of after-the-fact “JK,” it seems.
It is a shame they can’t take care of these undocumented kids (and their families) that are not legally in this country when they enter the school systems. Seems like that should be a trigger to at least the process of being a citizen. I don’t want to see people deported willy nilly, unless they have criminal backgrounds, but I certainly hope that a process gets figured out where these adults and their children can at least start the process of becoming citizens so they can eventually be on the right side of the laws of our country. Schools (K-12) are a great point of contact. It’s ridiculous to push this into college years.
It used to be “I’m not a racist/bigot/misogynist/homophobe/etc., but…[insert racist/bigoted/misogynist/homophobe/etc. comment here].”
The “just joking” defense is much better because you don’t even have to deploy it until after your deplorable comments have been made public.
That’s why [url = http://motto.time.com/4588752/michelle-obama-monkey-face-doctor/]this doctor was suspended for saying of Michelle Obama
She used “not racist” and followed up after her exposure with the claim that she didn’t realize “monkey face” was offensive. Perhaps “I was joking!” would have gone better?
@snoozn, well, joking or not, no one with any decency would make a comment like that. Not funny. Even taking out the racial connotations (which is almost impossible to do), making derogatory comments about a person’s appearance is so (at best) immature it’s hard to believe anyone could admit to saying it, let alone a physician. As for the professor, who is he kidding? How is that even funny?
I am having the unkind thought that perhaps the racist anesthesiologist could not get into Princeton.
@momofthreeboys, do you know how convoluted the naturalization process is even for those who are in the country legally? Not to mention that is costs almost $700 per person to apply, and it takes over a year to get naturalized? Part of this is due to inefficient processes, but mostly because there are so many applicants for US citizenship already.
Consider also that there has already been an immigration amnesty in this country and not many illegals chose to take advantage of the path to citizenship.
Is the student in a class with a professor who says “You are safe in my class” really any safer? All the professor is saying is that HE won’t report the student to ICE (does anyone report individuals to ICE?), not that someone else won’t, that the school won’t, that the local police won’t.
The DACA students would not have to be “reported” to ICE or any other governmental entity – remember they applied for DACA status through the government. The government already has all their information --DOB, address and foreign passport # if they have one.
