Um, what does this have to do with “urban hs education”?

HS Students having sex?!!? OMG!

LOL! Only urban HS students having sex? OMG2

I guess you all are fine with simulated violent sexual acts in a school setting?? Apparently this was taped at a school function.

[WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL](http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/entertainment/286234)

No, I’m not fine. But does it happen only urban high schools?

Mom of two graduates from urban high school. Nothing like that has been reported at our school. However, if you google Groton or Milton Academy…

More like “immaturity” and “present-day society” at their best… Nothing like this has happened at my “urban high school.”

I took the time to read the entire link from Post #1. The story is very concerning to me, as it involves a media exploration into a high school where the issue seems to be lax supervision over what happens at school functions; how slowly the administration responded and only after media inquiry and pressure, etc.

The boldfaced caption atop post #1 just sent this thread off in an odd direction, re: urban.

The story itself is worth examining, IMHO. Use the link on post 1, not post 5 which doesn’t seem to connect at this moment.

I agree it’s shocking and heads should roll at this school.

However, it still has nothing to do with “urban hs education” unless that’s barrons’ code for “black.”

yeah, barrons, it’s the use of “urban” that has caused the reactions – or non-reactions – here. My son’s “urban” hs wouldn’t allow this.

p3t, I read the whole story, too. That principal needs to retire.

Many of have heard the woes with the urban minority education sytems in this country. Some have suggested one big problem is a total breakdown in discipline at these schools. Case in point–my post.

Sorry about the other bad link. Had a couple of things going on at once.

Here’s the correct link

[WREG-TV Memphis - Updated: “Rape Dance” Investigation appears on national cable news](http://www.wreg.com/Global/story.asp?S=8281465)

Barrons:

I agree that the video is shocking. There appears to be no meaningful supervision of the students and the principal’s mea culpa is extremely lame.

I still think you overgeneralize about urban high schools. Our high school is 48% F/R lunch and nothing like that has ever been reported. Our S’s prom was the tamest I could have envisaged. There was a dance that was heavily chaperoned by teachers. No drinking. At 11, a group walked over to the cinema to see Lord of the Rings. At around 2 or 3, parents got calls to come and pick up the kids. My H dropped several of S’s friends at their home. All were stone cold sober.

The stats for most urban minority high schools would indicate otherwise. The few that do well tend to be magnet and other similar programs. Look at the worst performing schools nationwide and the data is very clear.
