Very apropos…

Apropos of what? It’s kind of content-free. Straw man by anecdote: I heard that this kid wanted to go where it was warm a few years ago, that kid wanted to snowboard, and some other one likes colleges where people dress up. No one cares about education anymore (except the author). Yeah, right.

Is this what’s referred to as a “puff piece” in jounalism? Thanks for sharing, anyway!

Shades of the “colleges my child didn’t like because” thread.

Yes, and the colleges my kid crossed of the list because… is wayyyyy more entertaining. imho.

Lol, you’re right, it’s changed so dramatically. For example, in my day you went to U Col Boulder for access to skiing, not snowboarding. The times they sure are a changin’.

I guess this is more evidence to show the erosion of values that made America exceptional…

Sorry should have elaborated; apropos of the rising juniors picking schools. Not, of course, Pulitzer Prize material (heck, it’s USA Today)…

You guys are a tough crowd; I’ll keep that in mind before I share next time

outside the very top colleges, does it really matter? The majority of kids don’t know what they want to do in life at 18, so major specific colleges don’t apply. So, if a kid wants a warm weather college, cold…so what.

I have 2 reactions to this column. On the one hand, it’s a silly giggle piece that could reflect cocktail party conversation between adults like ourselves. On the other hand, I’m irked by the message that kids don’t care about education.

::shrug:: Whatev. I’m over it. ;)

It’s so anecdotal as to be meaningless. “There’s a trend towards warm weather colleges.” Uh, really? What possible evidence is there that there is a trend towards warm weather colleges at the expense of colder weather ones … data on the # of applications over time? And even if so, would some of that be explainable to population trends moving south (and most students still applying to schools near home), not an exogenous desire for warm weather schools? There’s not even a stab at data. The U Col Boulder thing is silly - its appeal to kids who like snow sports is hardly some “new trend.” There was just no “there” to the article, rodney.

“Hey, Craig, do you have the final draft of the article you were working on?”

“The article?”

“…the article about trends in college applications and admissions. The one you were supposed to be working on for the past two weeks. You did write it, right?”

“Er, yes. Of course I didn’t forget until just now. What do you take me for, a fool?! Um… when is it due again?”

“We have to send it over to distributions in fifteen minutes!”

“Yes, yes. Um, can you come back in fourteen minutes? I have some… touching up to do.”
