USAA--pros & cons

Can folks who have or experienced USAA tell me what they do & don’t like about it? I’m convincing my dad to get USAA (he served in the military), so we can qualify. S wants to be able to use it for auto insurance & perhaps rental insurance as well. Anyone with experience & willing to talk about pros & cons? Thanks so much! H was rejected when he tried to enlist (flat feet), so he never served.

Dad is thinking of buying coverage for his golf clubs so we can qualify to be USAA members.

We have used USAA for almost 20yrs, honestly there is not a con. Great insurance at an affordable rate. My brother owns an insurance agency, he tells me stay with USAA. We use them for banking as well…never a problem!

We did the same.

Dad, and then I, got Jewelry coverage.

My children are the beneficiaries of significantly reduced auto coverage.
USAA could not match my (or Dad’s) longevity discount car or home premiums.

Completely agree – there is no con. They’re a pleasure to deal with and the rates are very reasonable.

Got it through my parents 23 years ago when we were insuring our first house, have yet to find a con. I especially like getting rebates on insurance in the years when they make too much money.

Okay just remembered a tiny con - my starter engine died when I was across the county and my free tow took me to the closest Ford dealer to where my car was as opposed to where I live. It was a pain to get back to once the car was fixed.

Thanks–dad did get his golf clubs covered. May insure our cameras and other stuff so S & D can get auto insurance and maybe renters insurance.

Agree- no con. Insurance is great- auto, home, renter, umbrella, etc. Banking services are also. When a student goes off to college they can get a USAA credit card. Their credit grows each year (assuming they are responsible) and then they have a credit start after graduation.

We have been with them all of our married life, 32 blissful years.

Reviews are pretty mixed, especially those more recently written. Some are VERY negative. Just wondering if any of you have any recent claims you filed & recovered from USAA. Thanks–customer service when a claim is filed is very important to me/us, especially on auto insurance, as that is the most likely to be needed.

Another huge USAA supporter here. My parents have been with them for over 60 years; I’ve been with them for 35 years; and my kids have been with them since before college. No complaints. Their customer service is very very good. We’ve never filed an auto claim {{knock on wood}} but we have filed a homeowners claim and we were very satisfied with the way they handled it. I’d be curious to hear more about those mixed reviews.

I LOVE USAA!!! I have had USAA forever as my dad was in NROTC. THe customer service has been wonderful. The roadside assistance is wonderful. THe few claims I’ve had (both home and car) were dealt with right away with no fuss.

Last year I had someone cut the catalytic converter off the bottom of my 4runner while I was at work - free towing and the claim was paid fast. The service guy just faxed the stuff to USAA - I had to pay the deductible ($250) but they paid the balance on the $1600 part plus labor.

I had a minor accident within the last two years which required completely rebuilding a door. It was deemed half my fault. (We both backed into each other in a parking lot.) There was no problem settling the claim, they arranged a rental car, as far as I can tell insurance rates are the same. All I paid was my deductible.

Also, we went through a period where DH had a car that was harder to work on and you couldn’t just take it anywhere. The free towing range seemed big and flexible to get the vehicle to someone who could work on it - not just nearest option. They also call you to tell you when the truck is arriving at who it will be for safety.

No major cons. I believe I have been a membr since 1990 or so, and have gradually migrated almost everything there. Homeowner and car insurance, credit cards (better rates than the AF base credit union, and lots of options), banking, investment, retirement , and 529 accounts. Kids started out with an “allowance” card, then a young persons debit card that you could use like a Visa credit card. . Recently graduated d is about to get one of those credit cards that start off being secured with your savings account, but then build your credit rating.

Fantastic website. Easy transfers 24/7.Great investment tools. Easy reports for income taxes (even that thing you have to calculate when you sell investments), replacement insurance cards, etc.

If there was a con, it would be becuase there are no brick and mortar facilities, depositing means you have to scan it on thier software, mail it, or transfer it electronically. Also, lately when you call for help, which is great for the most part, they try to “sell” you something.

Can’t recall any very recent experience with claims, but we probably have a high deductible and rarely use it.

We’ve had auto insurance with them for 25 years, but we don’t always use their homeowners insurance. In some cities, Amica insurance is less. Right now we have Amica for homeowners and USAA for auto. Both are top-rated, according to Consumer Reports. Another small con is USAA’s roadside assist. Their response time was always poor when I’ve needed them. I now use AAA and have been much happier, plus there are more discounts with the AAA card.

I searched on-line USAA insurance reviews & got a lot of websites with positives but some VERY negatives. There is even a website for people upset with USAA with scathing anecdotes. My insurance agent also has mixed feelings about USAA and has had dealings with them over the years. S is interested in trying them & we may buy them for D’s auto insurance as well. We may buy some personal property coverage so that we can let the kids buy auto insurance with them, now that we can purchase because my dad who served purchased.

Members for about 25 years, not a problem. Life, auto, homeowners, renters, personal property and flood insurance.
Never had a problem

For specific examples: H totaled a car on icy roads. He had what he considered very fair compensation within a week. No hassles about anything. Our home was broken into and many items were stolen. USAA was great. They paid for clean up of all the mess, replacement of items, repairs to the door that was broken. D1 had two $300 gift cards charged on her credit card. She did not buy them. It was taken care of quickly, charges were gone and a new card arrived promptly.

I looked up and read some of the negative reviews and in some cases I think the reviewer didn’t follow up the way I would have.

DD got USAA coverage on her car following transferring the title from our name to her name. Five days later (no typ0 there) she had an accident where they determined her car was totaled. Gave her a check for $3000-4000 MORE than we/she thought the car was worth. She bought a new car, insured again with USAA, and her insurance rate went up just $2/month. She couldn’t be happier with how it was all handled.

In my experience, 99% of the negative complaints against any insurance company comes from the user’s lack of understanding of how their policy works. I wouldn’t put a lot of store in those reviews because you really don’t know what is behind them.

USAA has been the gold standard in the insurance industry since forever. If you can get it, it’s worth having. There are other companies that are just as good, but USAA rates are usually much lower.

We’ve had USAA auto and homeowners for 17+ years. Very satisfied. Customer service it absolutely top notch. Our daughter uses them for banking and insurance, and says they are fantastic, too. No downsides as far as I’ve experienced, and we’ve had a number of claims over the years, both auto and minor homeowners. As long as you don’t feel you need to have a “friendly” insurance agent who has a physical office in your town, I see no reason not to use USAA if you are qualified.
