Yes, DH has let them know how irate I am and am insisting on looking at other companies (ie Armed Forces). He actually said he’s going to ask for a phone interview. GMTA :)

Wow, blueiguana! Thanks for posting that. Give Amica a call. We’ve had claims and have been very happy with how they handled them, plus they were less expensive than USAA.

Those people in Kansas are really nice.

Thanks. DH tried to do an online quote before he left work but got stumped on a few questions (how far is the fire hydrant, etc). We’ll be sure to compare before we commit to USAA for another year.

Just for some balance - I’ve had State Farm for many years for home and cars, have had a number of claims on cars, during which working with State Farm was great and no hassles at all, and 1 claim on the home after a break-in, with which they were again very good to work with and even had a program where all of my power tools that were stolen were replaced with brand new ones - i.e. not prorated/depreciated. They’ve never done a reappraisal of the house despite me being in an area where home prices have increased considerably since I bought (but there’s an auto-increase for the value which is reasonable and I validate it against the true rough rebuild cost).

If people haven’t made claims, especially more complicated ones, they really don’t know whether the insurance company will be good or not.

I’ve always made sure to NOT have the home insurance automatically deducted as part of the home payment simply because i want to have control over situations like the one you describe. There are too many stories of mistakes being made - usually coincidentally in their favor if you can imagine that.

I just got a written quote from them for auto insurance. It’s more than double the rate from the other insurer ($1100 for 3 cars for 1 year vs. $1300 for 3 cars for 6 months)! Am NOT interested at all in them! Very disappointed.

Will have to find out what happened with the homeowner’s insurance & umbrella with the insurer. USAA can’t even write anything but auto insurance in our state!

OK, looks like I am re-visiting & may be purchasing USAA after all for college D. We will be shipping vehicle to her in CA & have to get policy re-written. It’s high with them but many times higher with others! Oh well, I’m hoping our experiences with them will be OK. S wants to be able to purchase USAA & he can only do so if we purchase USAA insurance first. I told him we will likely purchase it in the near future & will keep him posted.
