USABO 2011 Discussion!

Cranking through Campbell’s Bio, Raven’s Bio and Raven’s Plants and Albert’s Molecular Bio of Cell=P (and doing plenty of practice questions from random sources at the same time)=P

@danny… your sponsor can’t be entirely clueless as they had to use the same place to download the exam as where they go to get the scores :-). all they have to do is login…

^ thats what i suspected, but she told me that she never received any log-in information

Hah. I wish. 25 people (23 juniors from a class of approx 200 and the two seniors who wanted to take it, one of them me) got above 29. One got a 42.

@dariceguy13

According to Adobe, there are some third party programs that will open it despite the password. The .pdf is not encrypted. There’s just a password blocking access. Some programs will ignore the password and just open the file.

@gardenofpotter

Trust me. You’re doing more than me, and you’re definitely doing more than I did last year, and I managed to make finals.

OTOH, Raven’s gen bio book is great, and if you live by a uni you can see if you can check it out for free.

To everyone:

Good luck!

you know you guys are doing this just to impress universities.

^you know that has no effect on people in their senior year. :P

@Nightshadequeen. 25 people. That’s very impressive. My school never even got to 20.

That’s much better than the measly total of two people from our school, lol.

@Nightshade
Damn. I’m the only one from my school out of 10 who took it, and this is the first year anyone’s ever done it…I had to organize it.
Your school must be amazing to have that many.
So has anyone been able to open that semifinal posted a page or so back?
I can’t figure a way out.

^My post should read:

Damn. Out of the 10 at my school who took it I’m the only one who passed.
Your school must be amazing to have that many.
So has anyone been able to open that semifinal posted a page or so back?
I can’t figure a way to open it.

hey, i got semifinalist, can someone with previous semifinalist tests pm me the links or just tell me so i can give you my email address to send to? it would be much appreciated, i have nothing in return, merely a quote from the Oddyssey:

For a comrade and a decent fellow is indeed no less than a brother.

thanks in advance

Hovito’s just mad that he got a 28. Better luck next year. Oh and, this is COLLEGE confidential.

^ unnecessary post… and wouldn’t you feel mad if you got a 28?

Well I took the semifinal exam today. I had to because my school’s spring break starts tomorrow. I am kind of mad that I had to take it on the first day but I can’t change that. Anyway, the exam was pretty easy for me except for a few of the multiple answer (roman numeral) style questions. In my opinion, this year’s semifinal was easier than last year’s semifinal and it was on par with this year’s open exam. On a scale of 1-10 I think that this year’s semifinal exam was a 5. Anyway if anybody wants to discuss some of the questions, PM me and I’ll be happy to discuss them with you if you give me some proof that you took the semifinal already.

Good luck to everybody that hasn’t taken the exam yet.

So can anyone who is taken a real semis exam tell me what the format is like? As in how many multiple choice questions, how many essays, short answers, etc.?

lol i actually got a 28…i’m really ****ed but only read the first 30 chapters of cambell when i took the exam, might try again next year

On the semifinal exam there are three sections titled A, B and C. Section A has questions similar in format and difficulty to the open exam meaning some roman numeral questions and some regular multiple choice. Section B has lab style questions if you will that require a deeper grasp of a subject. For example, there might be a lab scenario followed by a few questions. Section C consists some some short answer questions, these aren’t long essay questions but are more like questions that require a few sentences. Also, in section C there might be charts and then multiple answer questions after them. I hope that this gives a good overview of the format of a semifinal exam.

Also, Mitochondriac can you please tell me what you meant by the remark “So can anyone who is taken a real semis exam”.

I’m in college lol. The one time I took the USABO I got a 33 on the open exam and didn’t have time to take the semifinal exam because pimpin aint easy.

@emblem101

would you say this semi’s part C was easy/med/hard? how long did you spend on it? i think it was recommended like 40mins/section, would you say that’s pretty good guideline to follow?

I though part C was pretty easy and I only spent like 25 minutes on it. However, I thought that part B was hard and I spent like and hour on it. Part A took me about the recommended amount of time
