I felt that reading Raven’s bio of plants helped on this test more than reading campbell’s again would have. I didn’t read the molec bio book I’ve got because of laziness/time constraints, but I felt like it would have helped. But that’s me. Whatever.

So I just took the semifinal test today and I can safely say that I will not make it to finals. =) I would be happy if I got 90 points out of the 160 points lol…I’ll just say one more thing about the test today–I don’t know about test makers from previous years but the test makers this year are really lazy.

there is too much information (right or wrong) being shared… there is still another day or two of testing, so commentary should be minimized

I would like to start preparing for next year’s USABO Open Exam. Does anyone here have past open exams that they are willing to share? I can only find exams from 2004 and 2006. Thanks!

use the books… that’s the best prep :-)

Yeah. Read Campbell first of all and understand most of that stuff, then you can go to other books such as Raven’s.

as we did for the open exam, i think it would be best if we did not discuss any specific questions or answers to any of the questions for another two weeks or until finalists are notified (whichever comes first). last year, a certain school (which will be unnamed) actually took the test after the deadline…and some answers were already up on cc. we don’t know what schools are receiving what extensions to the deadlines so let’s be safe. also, there are people ■■■■■■■■ who are pming others for questions on the test even though they haven’t taken it…be on the lookout for those.

my school is taking the exam next week. I heard there is another school taking it next friday

I just took the USABO semifinals and it was pretty hard, good luck everyone.

Hopefully I may (<1%) make finals and meet some of you in real life haha

Now time to chill till next Jan

I have Campbell Biology v8 test bank and Raven Biology TB. I am loking for any USABO Open exam (exclude 2002,2006) to trade. Thanks

test was hard, hoping for 90ish. and yea don’t discuss till maybe next week.

yea it was insanely hard for me; but then again this is my first time taking such a test. hey do you get a certificate for at least becoming a semi-finalist?

It’s hard, but not impossible. I’d say roughly 80% of the materials can be answered solely via studying Campbell.

goyala, all Semifinalists automatically get a certificate.

^when and via whom? our teachers or mailed home?

Does anyone have a 2009 semifinalist exam who is wiling to exchange for a 2008 or 2007 semi? Thank in advance!!

Well, since someone PM’d me about section C questions, I’m really wondering about my answers (which I felt pretty good with, but not so sure now). If there is anyone who feels confident with their answers, would you please PM me for discussion? Thanks.

could someone explain how scoring works? the cover sheet said 1 point per Part A question and 2 points per Part B question, and with Part C included, that totals to 220 points. But people have been saying that the total is around 167, so I’m not sure how that works out…
And, does anyone know cutoffs from previous years and/or expected cutoff this year?
I just took the semis yesterday and I thought it was more LONG than hard, though there were quite a lot of challenging questions.

I have
-Campbell Biology v8 Test Bank
-Biology Raven and Johnson Text book
-Biology Raven and Johnson Test Bank
-Molecular Cell Biology 6e by Lodish, Berk, Kaiser, Krieger, Scott et al. Test Bank
and a lot more
. I am loking for any USABO Open exam (exclude 2004,2006) to trade. Thanks

When can we talk about the tests? What does everyone think the cutoff score will be?
