USC 2009 transfer thread

If you are asking if you should be worried concerning your status update, then no. It is not too late to turn in recs, but we had a big discussion of recs earlier on this thread. If you think it will help with your admission, then send them in.

“I am applying with 40 units completed , 4.0 GPA , California Community College. Should I be worried?”

is that a joke?? lol what possible reason would make u worried

I took AP exams in high school. So should I request an official score report to USC right now or wait until they accept me?

Tatty, when I talked to admissions they said you could report them on the application, but they didn’t say anything about submitting official scores. I just went ahead and had them sent anyways though, to be on the safe side.

They require my “AP Number” to order additional test score, and it seems that I’ve lost it. What can I do?

magic - i dont think you should be too worried, but im guessing youve applied to berkeley and ucla aswell, considering theyre cheaper for you… and im guessing youll most likely get in…
is USC your first choice ? or one of the other two ?

btw guys, i sent them a personal letter the other day, think itll get there on monday
basically i just wrote to them a 3 page letter about some of the things i love at USC and how i think id fit in, and just a bit about myself and my hopes of future at USC and stuff  also made a pretty funny mathematical formula that showed that i belonged at USC :stuck_out_tongue: which they might like

i hope it shows i really care about it and took the time  + i clearly stated that i dont mind losing some credits, thats fine because thatll let me take more courses at USC, and I made a list of all the courses i was hoping to take(including codes and number of credits) to finish my major :)

mainly i wrote it to be like a follow up for my application  since USC is my first choice, i thought why not  its so hard getting in as an international student… =/

hoping for the best
anyone else done this? i guess that if youre not 100% sure that youll go if youre admitted, its a pretty stupid move… i heard that someone had done that to another school saying that it was their first choice and everything, and they got in off a waitlist, and then they just said no, so like the university told other schools about it :stuck_out_tongue: which sucks!

Does this mean anything

ns89- haha! dang and i thought my sucking up to the assistant director of admissions would win me brownie points. Oh if only i weren’t such a terrible writer I’d give them a HOLLA! as well…good luck with that!

so i know they may always say there isn’t a preference but its obvious with like ucla and cc peeps, so is there a preference for the schools which USC pulls kids from?
everyone i tell about applying to USC tells me…oh…sorry but what they do is take cc kids first and then other schools then state schools :frowning: (i’m attending CSUN)
pff that sounds exactly like the damn ucla system of acceptance…how dare they mix that sleazy bruin info with the trojans!

El Taco Grande, I received the same e-mail about a month ago. I do not think it means anything since I received it last year as well and did not get in. Just turn in the rest of your documents as soon as you can.

Regarding on how USC accepts transfers, I would assume that they take the best possible candidates possible. That being said, they need to take a certain amount of CC kids because they need to be competitive with the UC schools for transfers.

I would not worry though, I am hoping to transfer from the University of Michigan, they probably look at how qualified you are.

travisR005, I applied for Biomedical Engineering. How about you?

Oh, and I’m applying for sophomore standing, status updated 4/9.

To fatpanda, I don’t think USC has much of a preference. USC is a private university, and has no required obligation (like the UC’s) to admit CC transfer students/students from other universities.

I got that message too eltacogrande since all I completed was the FAFSA.

I don’t plan on completing the CSS because my parents’ incomes are too high so I know I won’t get aid.
Hopefully it doesn’t mean anything I don’t want to pay for stupid the CSS Profile.

yeah i don’t think USC has any MAIN preference as to where they admit transfers from… i just think they accept a lot of CC students because they want to give qualified students from CCs a chance & also because they probably receive a higher volume of CC applicants as well – which would make sense (and thus make up 63% of transfers)

1/5 of transfers come from 4-year non-california schools tho (like me lol)

I don’t think that they necessarily give MORE CC students a chance, the more likely reason for the high number of matriculated/accepted CC students to USC is because there are significantly more CC students that apply to USC than the number of students from 4-year universities, as you said in the second portion of your post.

Radiance - actually they do give Community College students a slightly higher chance due to the fact that they have an articulation agreement with some of them. Agreements about taking certain classes that will fulfill the required prereqs and categories definantly help when reviewing for admissions about equivalent courses.

radiance, i’m a chemical engineer.

also the articulation agreements are just so that those courses will count… dont see why they would accept more just cause they have agreements to count those courses

the reason why i said that whole “they give cc students a little more of a chance” is cuz of that daily trojan article i read about usc working to admit transfers from disadvantaged backgrounds and stuff so i just thought maybe it fell in that category

but it definitely fits that they receive a lot more CC applicants in general

I’m a successful USC transfer from 2 years ago (biomedical engineering) and wanted to give you the timeline I had (it’s different for different schools). I didn’t get a spring grade request (but I had something of an unusual transfer situation so don’t read too much into that) and got my acceptance letter on May 15. I knew some Viterbi students who found out a little earlier. Even in following the transfer board here a fair amount at the time I wasn’t able to find any correlation between the online messages and my actual acceptance; while the UC schools update your online info such that you can find out your admit status before you get the letter, this was not true for USC (at least not 2 years ago).

Also, to weigh in on the CC applicants – I did come from a CC (with credits from a prior out-of-state uni also). However, I’ve met transfer applicants at Viterbi who transferred directly from out-of-state schools like Washington State.

Good luck and Fight On!!!

I agree with travis–They are only meant to specify courses that will transfer–USC has articulation agreements with many schools, not only CCs. I attended the Trojan Transfer counseling session last June and I was given a fatty packet of USC’s Articulation Agreement with UCSD (University of California, San Diego). All the classes I needed to take my freshman year were highlighted in the packet as well, including a list of courses that would transfer over, and others that wouldn’t.

I still stand by the fact that there are significantly more CC applicants than applicants from 4-year universities, hence why each transfer class is composed of mostly CC students.
