NYU vs USC is a decision that many on this forum (as well as the NYU forum) have to make. The “feel” of the school is something only an applicant can judge. The “better” question is largely meaningless without context. Better at what?

One thing that I found to be a significant difference between the two universities is the degree of compartmentalization of the schools. At USC it is pretty much non-existent. As long as your adviser signs off, you can take any class in any school. In contrast, at NYU you are more or less locked to the particular school you pick. Many upper-level classes are only available to students enrolled in a particular school, and there are often essentially the same classes offered at two different schools. The latter is particularly true in the arts, just compare the classes and majors offered in Tisch vs. Steinhardt.

if you’re going to do Econ, NYU is legit, and there’s a lot you can learn from being in the City, esp. if you’re interested in Finance. if you’re not used to cold weather, be prepared, because a lot of the upperclassmen dorms are far, far away from campus. it’s hard to get up at 9 in the morning when its icy cold and raining outside. profs are great, and TAs are as well. i’ve learned a lot from them and a couple of them helped me land internships. also met a couple of great friends.

but as GroovyGeek said, the school is very separated. maybe because its business and arts schools are much more prestigious than the rest… but it also causes a little bit of distance between the students.

hmm thats an interesting point, in terms of seperation. Do kids tend to linger and be around kids in the same school they are, like Tisch Stern etc because of clicks, or because of things such as dorms, schedules etc??

first off, the better school is not always easier to get into… i know ppl who got into UCBerkeley but not UCLA… so :)

anyway, both are obviously great schools, but like groovy said, NYU is a lot more separated in terms of schools and therefore you wont mix as much with new students… while usc seems really open about it personally i just transferred to usc and i dont know that much, but my adviser is freakin awesome and ive just switched from bio major to neuroscience before even starting! and it took like 1 email although its in the same school, but i think it shows good flexibility

also, usc undoubtedly has an advantage campus wise… sure NYU is cool since its in NYC, but i feel like you wouldnt get a real ‘college feel’ there, but you might get more ‘real life experience’ :)

i think both schools are good in different things, stern def puts a lot of ppl into great positions, but so does marshall, although youre CLAS/CAS, so i dont know exactly how the job placement is
what you should do, is definitely apply to both and look into the schools, visit if you can, or just get a real feel for the schools… some great things with USC is for example, awesome campus, football, great school(which is on the rise btw ), trojan family, weather, LA :)

NYU has its location as well, the weather there may suck at some points, but otherwise is pretty cool, i like it at least definitely prestigious, great school… and more im sure! :)
