USC Class of 2022

The website says FA reports come out 3-5 days after submitting everything…is this accurate? I feel like that’s very quick, but I’m definitely not complaining!

@Nomorelurker

As for Greek life… fraternities and sororities can each be very different from one another – both in terms of costs and their outlook & make-up. My youngest, like my oldest, was determined to be independent and had zero interest in rushing a sorority. In fact… she didn’t. But through a variety of circumstances she did come to meet a handful of girls in a relatively new sorority that also were willing to offer her a bid without her even formally rushing. She found them all to be just like her and not at all like some of the stereotypes that had previously dissuaded her from Greek life at USC. With this particular sorority, if you are also not living at the house, it can be fairly expensive… like most I assume. But those extra fees are all absorbed into room/board costs if you live within the house. Because of that differential, we found it affordable enough to let her both join the sorority and live in the house next year… and hopefully beyond. In fact, the overall costs for room/board + sorority fees, etc. should, as suggested by @jcwjnw99 , still represent a significant savings vs just room/board within USC Housing. Plus… she has already made a # of new friends and this specific sorority participates in a # of worthwhile events/causes. Overall… it is emerging a very positive, even if unexpected, outcome…

@myvineandfigtree Congrats! You may also want to post on the SCA thread…

@WWWard Do you think that the business floors in Pardee Tower are going to fill up soon? I am not sure that I’ll be attending since I was offered no money, but I don’t want to miss out on housing. Are all the good options filled at this point?

@ugradbiz

They do not actually assign housing until early May as I recall. If you are at least 50/50 on attending, I would simply pay the $55 now and sign-up through the portal with your preferences. It is likely worth just losing $55 vs not getting one of your top preferences should you decide to enroll.

If you are referring to a Special Interest Community, you should also apply per those instructions.

If anyone that was accepted would be willing to share there USC essays with me that would be so awesome! Not trying to steal any essays, just looking for inspiration! I am preparing to apply to transfer next year!!! please DM me!

Hey guys so Im most likely going to be living in McCarthy next year and was wondering what are the expensive items that I should bring with me to move-in day? By expensive I mean things such as a microwave, mini fridge, TV, etc.

Nevermind

Do USC students get discount on rail - MetroLink / Metro?

Dorms come with fridge and microwave.

New North is the loudest dorm and some kids love it. It is very Greek oriented every year, kids just know that and sign up for it if they want to.

The “Residential College” aspect of a dorm is more a window dressing and is not a big influence on your experience at all. The outdoor themed one take a hike, so do all dorm groups. All dorms do things whether on that residential college theme thing or not. The business one won’t fill up any faster the usual. The residential college thing became very popular for colleges to do in last few years, but pick the dorm you want, don’t base it on what they call the Residential College that reside in it. That means very little.

My daughter chose Birkrant over the Village and loves it. Gave her everything she wanted in a freshman experience. But I get people liking shiny and new. Because Village was just opened only McCarthy was available to freshman and she just wanted to meet the most people as possible, which she has. Everyone has their own priorities.

When it comes to dorms, the room mate is what can mess up the experience way more than the physical qualities of the dorm. USC does a fantastic job matching if you fill out profile honestly.

Hundreds of thousands have lived there with or without AC and had a ball. Don’t fret that stuff, they are kids on their way to adulthood, time to let go and let them fend with things.

A great dorm experience has very little to with the building and amenities and more to do with what you put into it, what you are mature enough to put up with and who the folks are in the dorm with you. My dorm was a step up from a prison room, and the only step is that you were safe in the shower, and I would not have traded my freshman year for anything.

Does anyone know if Dean’s scholars receive any perks at USC other than the money?

@gurodriguesl Some kids bring TVs, but now adays so many stream on their laptop that a TV isn’t necessary, and it an hard to find a spot for it in a dorm. CS kids tend to bring giant monitors. When they move to an apartment off campus, then they sometimes pitch in and get that big TV for their digs.

Anything you don’t bring you can get, best thing to get before hand is an Amazon Prime account. You can get a discount as a college student on Prime, but our family has one with cards on it, so they just go in an order what they need when they need it. At the dorm the next day or two. Came in handy when they wanted a “white tie and gangster hat” or something random for some random event. No ubering all over LA looking for stuff. So easy these days!

Back in my day, we got zero choice related to freshmen housing. Nada. They tried to roommate match a bit… but they offered zero selection in terms of the type or any varied offerings related to freshmen housing. And based on what my daughters were told during most of their various alumni interviews, USC seems to be rather rare in terms of the varied offerings of types… dorms, suites and apartments… at least among the elite colleges and universities. Ironically, the public universities seemed to offer the most diversity in terms of choices. They certainly do not offer freshmen such a preference list at Stanford, for example… at least not according to the recent grad who interviewed my daughter. “You just get a dorm room… and they are pretty much all alike”… as she put it. The only alum who seemed to actually like their freshmen housing were the two that went to Yale. So… if USC is the place for you, just be thankful that it is not “one size or style fits all” in their freshmen housing approach. You at least get to have some preferences to choose among.

@yungsnake99 Dean’s is just about money. Even the Pres and Trustees are just about money with a specified housing choice, they aren’t about being in an honors program, that can be confusing. It is not like at some schools where you may also be part of an honors program that puts you in a certain track or grouped with people in smaller classes. At USC, students that get 1/2 or full tuition merit can choose to group together in a certain dorm building which is optional to do as well. Was Birkrant until last year, now it is McCarthy. Anyone (except those in certain speciality majors like WBB) can apply to honors programs like the Thematic Option. Perhaps being a Trustee helped getting into FSH, but you don’t have to have any of the merit awards to apply to honors programs.

Does anyone not have anything on their portal for financial aid? My FAFSA was submitted a long time ago and I don’t think I’m going to get any FA but I don’t even have a document that summarizes costs or says net aid: 0. Should I call the financial aid office or are they still uploading financial aid?

Same here. Still “pending”

Does anyone have the link on the stats for the class of 22?

Where did people hear about Dean’s?
