USC Class of 2022

Hi I just got assigned my dorm and my dorm was not even in my top 5 preferences I submitted. How successful is applying for reassignment if I’m looking to be in New/North, Pardee, or Birnkrant ? Is there a low chance I get reassigned?

Thanks @CADREAMIN. Parkside actually does sound great. He’s just unhappy not to receive any of his choices and the roommates don’t seem like the best match at first glance. I’m sure that will all be forgotten and he’ll be really excited once he actually gets to campus.

My D was assigned a room in McCarthy, but it was not her first choice. She’s in one of the triples that has a single and double room with a shared bathroom. She’s in the double and is concerned (based on posted floorpans) that it doesn’t have 2 full sized desks. Thinking about a re-assignment, but likes the roommate she was assigned and will probably stick it out. Can anyone that has seen one of these rooms comment ion the size and layout? Thanks.

Although we put Parkside International and A&H as our first two choices, my friend and I got placed into Marks Hall and was wondering if anyone can tell us anything about it there?

Thank you~

I still haven’t gotten an email yet and when go to the application it’s all red letters that say have wait for email. Should be worried because it seems like everyone else has their housing?.

It is unfortunate that some are not getting their preferred housing choices. Good luck in the reassignment process.

To future applicants that may be viewing this thread, I will repeat what USC Housing suggested to my older daughter in 2014… the best way to get what you want is to locate at least one roommate and then request each other and match your housing preferences in order exactly. My daughter did such, and they got their first choice. And it has worked for many as well - before then and since. You quite simply make their job easier in placing you… as they can satisfy two simultaneously.

I guess it’s just another whimsical process. My S18 did get his top choice in MCCarthy (4 person loft). That was the only McCarthy option he chose, so I was a bit surprised he got it. Didn’t have a roommate in advance (went random), and didn’t apply especially early. No clue, but we are thrilled.

@kcheves I think our daughters may be suite mates. Mine is in a 3bdr and has the single. One of her suite mates is in Viterbi. From our understanding, all the furniture is standard. The floorplan might make it look smaller but a quick call to housing should clarify.

@Treealum - Yes! She will love it! (I may have an in to the RAs there. )

@prepro986 @ravensfan204 Reassignments can happen especially if submitted so fast - a lot of things change over summer even. And yes, don’t hesitate to call housing, I have always found them super helpful and understanding.

@Booajo If you wanted McCarthy above all else the 4 person loft is the play because it is small and is the only suite versus apartment in set up so they are the last to go there. Being willing to let them room mate match helps too.

@kcheves that’s a great floorplan.

Keep in mind with the rooms - they are going to college, they aren’t being sent to the Ritz - let them deal with things, the time for you to worry about them being perfectly comfortable in a little bubble is coming to a close, it is up to them to work things out. They grow and become better people when they have to figure things out on their own…and yes, they may even have to compromise on things!

And while it may be not be the Ritz, for goodness sake, they are going to USC - I haven’t heard reports of mass suffering out of there. All the housing has positives and negatives - it is college, it should. Don’t put stress on them about the housing not being ideal, it’s really not supposed to be the Barbie dream house.

Thanks @2022yvr and @CADREAMIN, I’m sure my D will be fine in the 3PDBLE.

I have never been one to care at all about the CC list of top universities and frankly wasn’t sure exactly where to find it, but I just happened upon it when moving around the forum so thought I would take a look…what I realized (after a quick comparison and nothing scientific) is that the USC Class of 2022 thread has 1.2 Million views - making it more active than any of the other top schools on the CC list in terms of “Class of 2022” threads for this year, including UCLA with their 100k applicants. USC had twice as many posts as UCLA on the Class of thread as well. So just saying, we are an involved bunch here on this forum. The current transfer thread has been buzzing for weeks. So now I am starting to believe what other’s believe, I guess someone just doesn’t like USC, jk. It’s ok, we like us.

@kcheves My son also got the 3 person - but the single - and it was his 3rd option (wanted the 4 person single, or the 2 person single). He has requested reassignment, but I know that a lot of people who wanted McCarthy did not get it, so not holding out hope that he will get reassigned. I’m sure it will all workout great.

@Booajo I love that loft room with the ladder for storage! Great space.

@cm1992000. Thanks for the reply. My D is not optimistic about re-assignment either, but with the positive comments here about the 3 person double room layout I’m sure she’ll be happy either way.

Does anyone know if the $800 confirmation payment for housing will be immediately deducted from our cards?

@hannahmars18 Yes… it will be. If you are on Financial Aid, you can request a deferral though.

For those that submitted housing reassignment requests, it looks they are rolling out. My D’s request was granted, she is changing from a 3PDBLE to a 4PDBLE-DB in McCarthy.

Great she got what she wanted! Both of those are awesome. So it was a win win.

D is going to Viterbi Summer Institute for summer, from July to beginning of August. Anyone have experience with this program?

We are presently trying decide what to with her when VSI ends August 3 and McCarthy check in is August 13. We are debating bring her home or taking the whole clan of us to LA for a couple of weeks.
