USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

The one that’s really funny is how Felicity Huffman’s daughter went from a 1020 PSAT to a 1420 SAT in one year. Sure it’s possible with studying, but she didn’t study. So, how would that girl end up surviving at Georgetown? Unless the cheating were to continue …

This is going to open an argument but it also shows another huge flaw in the College Board’s awarding of extra time which was intended for kids with REAL learning disabilities… All of the students in this scandal were able to cheat through extra time tests. Too many parents are abusing this for the students and the College Board does not report to the colleges if a child gets extra time. So again, my kids follow the rules and get behind folks who cheat the system. https://nypost.com/2018/05/02/rich-parents-are-using-doctors-notes-to-help-kids-cheat-the-sats/

Thanks everyone for the info regarding late night amenities!

@SlimJim005 the FBI might come to our school, her dad was arrested, her mom will be, but she is in the bahamas right now with her friends. our administration is having emergency meetings because of it

We have a surfeit of kids with Individual Education Programs at my daughter’s school, and the most distinguishing characteristic among them appears to be pushy parents. It’s unfortunate, because I wonder how many kids WITHOUT pushy parents actually have real issues that could be effectively addressed by extra time on tests, etc.

The extra time thing has got to be addressed. There are parents all over getting their kids special accommodations that don’t deserve them. The kids that don’t have them are being weeded out by admissions on the first go round for not having high enough scores. This is not even close to a level playing field.

My daughter has a friend who is allowed to use a calculator on tests in a math class that does not allow it. Pushy parent. She also rubs it in the other student’s faces that she can use the calculator.

@JohnGaltIII Getting to use a calculator when no one else does? That’s a joke. Was her mother on “Desperate Housewives”?

Unbelievable
Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman implicated in cheating scandal https://mol.im/a/6799945 via http://dailym.ai/android

^^^ Been discussing this in previous posts. And it’s so much bigger than those two. We know one of the girls. They don’t come to class and have someone else sign them in. Big surprise.

USC seems to have a broken culture at this point. So many scandals.
https://www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/usc-scandals/

This latest scandal involves The Who’s who of universities, I don’t think USC has the market cornered on immorality. Also there are still thousands of great kids/families at USC and any other school. These are some bad apples but they don’t ruin the whole bunch. Even in times of no scandals, USC is a school outsiders love to hate. I do think those at USC have to be expelled for the school to hold on to any credibility. I was stunned about the UT tennis coach. He has always been on a pinnacle and great guy for the sport.

^^^ I concur with the above. I would not take these accusations about 30-50 corrupt and deceptive parents as an indictment against USC or any of the elite schools that were affected. Those schools were also victims. Just like some applicants who may have otherwise got in were clearly victimized. The justice system is rightly targeting the culprits… those parents and those few at these schools who actually took bribes. But again, this is only a small # of people so far. From what I can tell… less than 100 applicants to various schools spread out over many years. 99.999% of the 65K+ who applied to USC, for example, did not utilize such fraud or deception to further their goals. And while yes it is annoying that a even a few students were admitted to USC, Yale, Stanford and the rest when they clearly should not have been… that does not taint all else who were. Even the vast majority of applicants from wealthy families play by the rules when applying. Clearly they still have certain advantages … but at least their influence is not part of a criminal conspiracy.

It’s about money. These coaches are only paid so much, and they’ve got some pull that allows them to push certain kids through. So, they’re selling the pull that they have for a few bottom rung positions on a team and saying “it’s a recruited athlete.”

Seriously. Lori Laughlin’s daughter, who looks so stupid on YouTube is crew athlete? Who would buy that?

It’s true that other schools were involved but at this point, at least, USC was the only school that had an athletic administrator involved. The other schools had individual coaches getting kick backs. USC seems to have had multiple coaches and the primary administrator involved. None of that negates that the vast majority of profs, students and alums are qualified. It does suggest that there is an institutional disconnect on some level that so many scandals have occurred over the last few years. There is also a scandal with the School of Social Work. This really does a disservice to all the hard working kids who take pride in working hard.

My son and some of his friends are upset Clay Helton was NOT on the list.

@JohnGaltIII LOL

This just puts the University in a bad spot again. First the Gynecologist incident which is going to cost the university. Then the dean at Marshal being let go with tons of support for him to stay. Then the in fighting with the BOT. This doesn’t include the inefficiencies of the Athletic department and their issues over the past 5 years. Now add this to the ever growing problems and USC is going to feel it. A lot of people are not happy this may start to effect donations and the support of the university.

It really vexes me as to the reputation damage this will do. It gets worse for USC, as a professor of dentistry was on the other side. http://dailytrojan.com/2019/03/12/athletic-director-water-polo-coach-fired-in-wake-of-fbi-investigation-of-admission-scam/

@romns116 There’s also a Trader Joes on campus!

@kerlykerls Which school? Brentwood? Crossroads? Windward? Harvard Westlake?
