@anxiety247 I read from a CC post somewhere written by a former USC student who transferred to another school that he/she had conflicts at USC with administration and faced some challenges with internal communication. Of course this may not be the case for everyone, but after the recent scandal I seriously question the integrity and trustworthiness of the school
@â2605 Mandy Wayâ Yes spring admissions comes out at same time as regular. The package is a different color - has been yellow instead of white. They may change it up, but we wonât know till they start arriving, but definitely at the same time. Good luck!
@rrproductsun The area around USC is very dangerous, and Iâve heard from a ton of people to not leave campus at night. The recent student death occurred about a mile from campus I believe
@WWWard I think you are overly optimistic about the number of USC students who got in via fake athletic recruitment. The federal indictment indicates that SInger was involved in at least 800 known bribery scams which based on his pattern of behavior/connections seems to indicate that majority of the fraudulent admits may have involved USC. In that regard, your mathematical analysis of the fraudulent student ratio is grossly understated.
In addition, the side door admission to many private schools via questionnable athletic prowess has been well known to many parents especially parents of children in team sports because many of these âathletesâ could be lifetime bench player thus never exposing their true skills.
@anxiety247 Students have true mentor relationships with professors, particularly in your major. Of course it is up to you to reach out and develop it, but they are there for you if you take advantage of it. Students have to realize they need to develop it through office hours and showing the commitment to the class and material. The connections you can make through these relationships are amazing. The USC alumni network is the best there is.
@thstude517 When a new poster comes on with nothing but disparaging remarks and no posting history or actual experience with a school, the mean spirited motivation is quite obvious and so childish. Just because someone will never go to USC, making things up about a school is not in the spirit of CC which is a helpful forum. It is not helpful to students who are here for actual information. The best thing this scandal did is show everyone how desirable USC is to so many people, but the people that canât get in it just want to hate hate hate. Jealousy is such an obvious emotion. CC is a place people can get useful information or opinions and have open discussions, it is not full of immature/trash posts like other sites.
Often times posts of this nature reflect a personal disappointment. Itâs all really very transparent.
@Momof2boys1 Youâre welcome.
@blueskies2day I agree in part and disagree in part with you response to @thstud517 .
I think one could also conclude that USC was the school that was the easiest to corrupt and not necessarily the most desirable. In addition, I would think that parents of most of these fraud admits knew that if they tried to cheat their way into Stanford, Berkeley or Harvard, people would be lot more suspicious. Based on that I would disagree with your observation: âThe best thing this scandal did is show everyone how desirable USC is to so many peopleâ
@rrproductsun Although the shooting of the student from Oakland was a tragedy, some headlines have been misleading. Near campus is a relative term. This was around 3/4 of a mile away on the other side of I-110. It was also after midnight. The student, of course, should have been able to go wherever they wanted without being a victim of an armed robbery, but if one follows the security advice and tools readily available at USC it is not an incident that needs to occur.
@blueskies2day I think a few parents are voicing concerns about the scandal for legitimate reasons. They are not attacking you or your child. To call us âjealousâ is frankly quite childish on your part. I donât see any trashing here. No school is perfect. I have found the comments of current students who are having a positive experience at usc reassuring and helpful. I appreciate those responses.
@JohnGaltIII, very balanced post, there. Itâs also in fact my understanding that USCâs on-campus safety is on very solid grounds. IIRC correctly is rated a âB,â and in fact safer than many other college campuses around America. I was saddened, as we all were, by that Thornton studentâs murder. I wish he would have been more careful being off-campus so late at night.
The anti-USC vitriol is running thick and wide on CC today. On the main thread for the bribery scandal, one poster (no, he/she is NOT a new poster on CC) even volunteered the following:
âUSCâs campus is ugly.â (really? really???)
and
âUSC is in a bad neighborhood.â (again, really? whatâs the neighborhood like around Penn? Chicago? Notre Dame? Columbia?)
I just donât have the energy to respond to these (sadly, rather typical) attacks tonightâŠ
@southswell My #s were derived from the actual indictments⊠i.e. - what the U.S. Department of Justice has published to date. You are of course welcome to speculate at will. I prefer to go with the actual facts. Should they alter the details at a later stage, I will of course alter my analysis of such.
In general⊠as I have stated before, money and influence has always been a potential catalyst for swaying an admission decision at most private universities. But, over time, even this practice has waned at USC. USC now routinely rejects 90% of all legacy applicants⊠including many from wealthy backgrounds. In recent years⊠17% or so of the enrolled freshman class have been FirstGen⊠21% or so of the enrolled freshman class have been Pell Grant recipients and deemed low-income by the federal government⊠66% of all current undergraduates in total receive some form of financial assistance - either need-based grants or merit scholarships. Are there rich kids there at USC? Of course. Are there celebrity kids there at USC? Of course. Are such examples the norm or the majority? No⊠far from it.
It really does not matter how you derive your decision to either support the idea of attending USC or choose to cite bitterness toward USC. As @blueskies2day has stated, most simply do so out of envy / jealousy or bitterness about rejection. I have seen posts here on CC from people saying that they would never send their kids to a school that recruited O.J. Simpson, for example, as if athletic recruiters back in the 1960s could have foreseen his criminal activities to come in the 1990s. I have seen 100s if not 1000s of rants against USC on CC over the past 5 years. For anyone with such a negative mindset, congrats⊠there are 1000s of other college and university options out there. If you choose to rant against USC or any other school however simply because of your disappointment about rejection, maybe you should find a different outlet for your angst. CC is primarily designed as a platform for positive and encouraging dialogue. I see it as a platform to ask and / or answer questions and to share the wisdom that hopefully comes from experience. But again⊠CC is whatever you choose to make it. And far too often, it has seemed to evolve into a platform for negative rants and unproductive discourse.
But @CADREAMIN and I remain available to those who actually have concrete and earnest questions about USC⊠including the admissions process and the transitional period once applicants become admits set on attending. We each have also shepherded kids through the process through graduation. CC was helpful and instrumental to me in the past, and I endeavor to pay it forward.
Good luck to all those who are actually on here in anticipation of admission decisions by monthâs endâŠ
@blueskies2day Nothing that I posted was âmade up.â Iâm literally just providing insight because there is a lot of stuff that occurs behind the scenes in administration that colleges donât want you to know, as revealed through the recent scandal that I am sure is one of many scandals throughout universities, but just havenât been discovered yet.
Itâs very disheartening to join a forum with the intent of sharing some concerns and immediately get shut down with accusations of being âmean,â âjealous,ââimmature,â and making info up. All of my posts werenât even opinions; just proven statistics about crime rate or a recount of a post written by a former USC student I read on CC. Did I infer/wrongly accuse anything negative about USC? No. Imagine when you first joined with initially no posting history, posted for the first time, and immediately had someone call it a âtrash post.â I have participated in numerous university competitions throughout high school as a business innovator, have done a ton of research, and have worked hard all my life to be where I am today, so it is discouraging when someone immediately infers someone that they never met has no âactual experience with a school.â Iâm a high school student who completed the entire college admission process with no help from anyone else, so contrary to your thoughts, I do have experience.
You say to not be immature or mean, but perhaps you should practice what you preach.
@WWWard No speculation here. If you prefer to use facts then go back and read the indictment for your own edification.
Page 13 of the indictment states the number of times that Singer used the side door method.
@thstud517 Okay⊠so what are you actually trying to accomplish here on CC? Are you an USC applicant or a parent of an applicant? If so⊠your brief posting history does not demonstrate any inquiries. Are you a current USC student or alumnus⊠or the parent of such⊠with insight to share? You have made 6 posts, and 3 of them have offered negative commentary about USC. Is that your sole intent or purpose? That is why @blueskies2day made their comment. But it is not just you⊠we have seen such postings from new posters literally 1000s of times over the years. So, again⊠what is your actual purpose in posting? You claim to be here solely to provide insight⊠great, but based on what? the other negative commentary via CC posters? or via your own personal experiences?
And the same applies to @southswell and your brief posting history.
The point is that CC is designed primarily for a purpose⊠a positive and encouraging one⊠one that you do not seem to be posting in the spirit ofâŠ
But⊠post at will. Just do not be shocked when others take offense to your tone or manner.
@WWWard You should not go on a tirade just because your inaccuracies and statistical errors are revealed. When someone politely shows you that you made a mathematical error, acknowledge it and move on. You should not try to police what people get to say on this forum.
@WWWard My posts are in response to two people who had inquiries: one about the safety of the school, one about the internal administration communication, and the other one was in response to blueskies. I tagged the people I was responding to since they had inquiries. I understand positivity, but Iâm not going to downright lie and say that the surrounding area is completely safe because itâs not, and I know there are some concerns with that. And I am a student.
When I was last on campus, I had the opportunity to talk with some of the DPS officers, and hear from the Chief. As the parent of a UVA grad and current Tulane student, I must say that I was very impressed with the safety plans, and reporting system. Crime happens everywhere, and unfortunately, is more of an issue when the criminals know the people in the area have low âstreet smarts,â and look like they have money. I canât tell you how many ârobbed at gunpoint at 2am, on their porch,â alerts I get every August. Its sad when someone is killed, because they definitely didnât deserve to die, for being out, so we need to make sure we remind our kids to do everything possible to minimize the risk. It doesnât mean they wonât be crime victims, but we can try to reduce the chance it will cost them their lives.

If posters canât respectfully bring up any concerns about usc without being called names by the self designated gatekeepers of this board, then I think there is very little utility to this board other than the usual questions of âwhen are decisions coming outâ etc. It is too bad. I donât see the students doing this. It seems to be the parents. Good luck everyone.
