USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

I believe close to 70K applications and around 7K will be accepted.

^^^ insane #s

God Bless those folks in admissions. I have met a few and they do want the process to be holistic rather than purely by the numbers and with 70k applications that is no easy task. And you have to guess the average quality of the applicant is higher than the average college as well giving them a lot of good folks from whom to choose. Ass to that wading through the phony narratives applicants can create. A classmate of one of my kids used a college consultant. They set up a gofundme page for a non-profit that raised under $1000 but on her application it read that she set up and spent ten hours a week operating a non-profit for XYZ.

I know it’s even harder on the students applying this year with the lower numbers being accepted, but I can say that some students are thankful for those lower # of admits. I was there last week and mentioned the lower # of people coming in this year to a group of students and they said thank goodness. Between freshman year to sophomore year they felt the swell of a larger than usual number of people being admitted last year. To them, things like dining halls and the like feel way more crowded than the year before. So they definitely noticed the surge on campus and were happy to get an explanation of the noticeable change. Thought that was interesting. UCS certainly can’t get any bigger, it has reached capacity for sure.

I know they really felt it during housing picks. The Village filled up fast. Hopefully with a smaller class this year, more of them will get to live there as sophomores.

Hi! Omg this is so weird I was just browsing for old time sake and because I was on this site last year. Currently I’m a freshman at USC and just to answer some questions:

its safety is great (we have fingerprint scanners for dorms and guards at each dorm 24/7, after 9pm you must show IDs to security guards to get on campus, in libraries officers check IDs after 9pm and the gates are closed (for students you show ID). I once was concerned about someone on campus and called DPS and immediately 4 cops showed up (it was a-okay though :)
safety is taken very serious ON campus and about a two block radius
we have free Lyft (“frift” as sc students call it) after 9pm, I believe, till 2 am (I don’t use it very often). Only dangerous parts are after midnight away/off of campus. The student who was shot was a mile away but there was the highway in between though.

As for USC as a whole it truly is a wonderful school and of course I’m disheartened by this week’s events. I’m a business/CS major so I can admit there are a bunch of questionable admits at USC. It’s very evident wealth is big but that solely remains within Greek life (top tier frats and sororities) in my honest opinion. And greek life is big here (I joke “20% are physically involved but it feels more like 80% is” as it’s the party/social scene). Butttt that doesn’t mean there aren’t other activities. (Cliche as it sounds but they offer a bajillion ways to get involved)

For those who are saying “If my D or S chooses USC, her/his degree value will go down”–I think that’s very narrow minded because as mentioned, these fraud cases were a couple rotten apples. Keep in mind USC is a lot bigger than Yale or Georgetown so the chances of this happening are greater. I argue the school is undergoing “growing pains”–the amount of applicants and fame and pressure is something they are not accustomed to as a school. (USC is now one of the “elites” according to the news lol) but they haven’t always been near the top, so this is overwhelming for them and yes they’re struggling but I believe they will tackle this issue. Yale and Harvard has always known to be the best, they’ve been doing it forever
USC is a baby compared to them. So please think about that when considering “withdrawing” your application.

And a last note: I like to tell people I’m a happier person at this school. Sounds weird, but I’m just so much kinder and grateful. I went to snobby private high school and I was expecting that here but heck no, staff are wonderful and always smiling—it’s crazy how wrong I was. And avoiding the pompous entitled students is easy. And the weather (seasonal depression is so real haha) helps so much with mood. From the Target to Trader Joe’s to Starbucks (where you can use your dining dollars at!!! :), I feel so spoiled yet so blessed to experience a school like SC.

They posted last year when they sent their packages on instagram. They sent them on a Thursday and I checked USPS and I was a two day zone, so I did receive my package on Saturday. (Another student that lived near me didn’t receive any package until Monday–USPS am I right?) then on Sunday it went on the portal (I didn’t check lol I hear 12ish Pacific time though). Rejection via envelope received later.

ALSO @WWWard and @CADREAMIN are blessings they helped me stay informed so well last year through the anticipation Thank you guys so much I respect you a ton!

Lmk if you have any questions and best of luck

Fight on! :))))

Thanks, @robintrent So glad to hear that you are enjoying USC and that it has met or exceeded your expectations.

Your thoughts reminded me
I suggest that all admitted students consider reading the USC scorecard / grades and rankings at the Niche College Rankings. What I like about it is that they go into much greater detail and really focus on the aspects that relate to fit and happiness at a university. Often
other college rankings do not really provide info that translates well into predictions about the overall college experience. For example
 overall grade A+
 rank nationally #20
but it also emphasizes things like: USC is #1 out of 131 in terms of best big college in America
also #1 for film & design
 #2 for business and communications
 etc., etc. These stood out
#7 out of 1542 for best student life
#12 out of of 848 for greek life
#13 out of 1408 for best campus. There are many many more.

And these are based primarily on student, alumni and faculty surveys.

@robintrent Wish I could like your post a hundred times. There is nothing better than student’s perspectives. What a mature and sound view you have of things in general. Way to represent. And thanks.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Let’s please get back on track. If you feel that posters are violating the Terms of Service, please report the posts. Otherwise, ignore them.

Also, there is already a thread about the admissions scandal, so please do not discuss it in this thread.

@mainelonghorn Thanks

@CADREAMIN Saw your previous comment: “However, if an acceptance package is sent late or separate from the main batch (like a Thornton audition applicant)
” and panicked. Are Thornton notifications sent separately from–i.e., later than–other regular decisions? I have next week circled on my calendar for the USC decision. It’s hard to imagine waiting even longer!

We know Thornton performance based results are often sent out separately than the main batch and directly from Thornton, and sometimes their timing has been different. I would assume the goal is to go with regular admissions, but let me phone a friend here.

Calling @SCMHAALUM. Hello my friend, can you shed more light on @PercussionMama question. You would have more/better specifics than I could offer. Hope all is well with your son, been wondering if there is any new news.

post edit - sorry if I caused you more stress, I know it is a super tense time in many homes over the next week! Hoping @SCMHAALUM has good news for you, or another previous Thornton poster that wants to jump in.

Hi @CADREAMIN . @PercussionMama A friend of my son’s got his acceptance to Thorton last year on 3/24. We are still waiting to hear from dance school. Not as stressful as last year since he is loving school  Thank you!

Thanks, @CADREAMIN and @SCMHAALUM ! Sounds like notifications are likely to come at the same time as regular decisions whether or not they get mailed in the same big batch. Fingers crossed!

To Recap for the applicants waiting: the likely mail-out of admissions packages, sent via USPS Priority Mail, will be March 20-22 with portal updates for all applicants by March 24-25. Once USC confirms sending them out, which they always do via social networking platforms, you can project your likely delivery window via the following link
https://www.usps.com/priority-mail/map/ Simply use 90007 as the originating zip code. Be forewarned however that USPS is far from 100% reliable, and they do too often miss those delivery windows. The portal updates will be the definitive answer. Rejection letters arrive via regular mail later. While you can of course try Informed Delivery via USPS, as it has worked for some, USC does not enable tracking and historically very few of those actually getting the admission packets were able to gain that same-day advanced notice. The vast majority who have had Informed Delivery, including my own family, were not able to see this particular type of package en route. But there is always a chance. Of course, this out-dated notification method which relies on the U.S. Postal Service is very “Old School” and designed to provide an unique “Mailbox Moment” for those admitted to USC. And it probably is so for 80%+ of all admitted applicants. But many also learn via the portal updates first
as was the case in 2017 for my younger daughter.

Best of luck to all those waiting for good news next week

Thanks @WWWard We appreciate all of your posts!

^^^ you’re welcome

Any SDA invites? Nothing here. (Except the generic postcard that came in December shortly after application).

Does USC Admissions still have an active Twitter? I cannot find it because last year they posted a video of them putting packages together a few days before mail out. I remember somebody commenting they used zoom to see if they could see names, LOL.
