Essays were fine (I’m a harsh critic), video submission was a period piece, writing submission was a short script (not the film pitch).
@CADREAMIN If we were not invited or notified about a merit scholarship already, does this mean we are not getting one? I am confused; I understand that some require interviews and some do not, but what about the ones that don’t? Are those reserved for the people who don’t make the cut on the highest ones?
@MILdreaming
There are usually some Deans given out after acceptances - the amount given varies a bit by year depending on funds available to do so…they are 1/4 tuition. Those were not interviewed for, though conceivable, a person that interviews for 1/2 (Presidential) or Full (Trustee) could be bumped down to Deans or even Directors (not common but has happened).
There are a few (and I mean a few - like 10) Associates and Leadership scholarships (18k & 10k) that some people get by surprise, and a wonderful one at that. Any of these appear in your portal in the next few day. So aside from these 10-20 of these two, the biggest are off the table except for those that were notified and interviewed in January/Feb. Then there are scholarship by special interest groups that some people may have applied to. These should appear anytime between now and early next week.
NMS Finalist accepted and that names USC as #1 choice will have their account updated later in April, they are not part of today’s notifications.
In recent years, scholarship notifications have come early evening (5-6:30), but I didn’t ask birdie specifically about this. Hopefully 3 or 4, but I really don’t know.
My sister applied to the School of Cinematic Arts and only that as her first choice major (she’s interested in pursuing animation), and she was accepted to USC, however, her major says Open (Undecided). What does this mean? Can you be admitted to the university but not to the school you applied to? Where has she been admitted if not SCA and does this mean that the only way for her to be an SCA student would be to transfer next year?
We’re really confused and worried and not sure what this means. Any help / information would be really greatly appreciated! Thank you so much.
It means that she was admitted to USC only and not to a school within USC or a major yet. If she enrolls at USC, she can attempt to internally transfer to that same major later or to any other major… whether within SCA or not.
This happened to my younger daughter in 2017. She was admitted but as Undeclared. She internally transferred into SCA for the Spring semester 2018 freshman year, applying in July 2017 and hearing back in October 2017. And since your first semester is usually just GEs, it matters very little.
Here is a link on the process to internally transfer into Animation…
Delurking after following this thread religiously for the last year to, first, say a particular THANK YOU to @WWWard and @CADREAMIN. Your knowledge of this process has been invaluable to those of us terrified parents going through the process for the first time - but your words of calm and wisdom the last few days have been even more important.
That said, @CADREAMIN , a question about NMF Presidential scholarship: We were overjoyed when our son was admitted yesterday. He is a NMF and has listed USC as his #1 choice. My question: is that scholarship guaranteed to be awarded? The language on USC’s “Scholarships” publication is a little vague: “students are considered if they have been designated …” This will be a HUGE factor in whether we can afford to send our son next fall.
@PhysBuzz23 Same for my D, she reached out to the admissions counselor for our area and this was the response…
“After reviewing all of your material, you were considered for your second choice major – but because you did not choose a second choice major, you were accepted as “Open.” If you decide to commit to USC, you will be able to take classes within different schools including SCA and have the opportunity to re-apply. I encourage you to visit https://cinema.usc.edu/admissions/faq.cfm, it provides various detailed answers to any questions you might have. Please let me know if this is helpful and if you have other questions or concerns.”

As grateful as I am to have an admission, I rlly don’t know what I did wrong that resulted in me getting spring instead of fall. I feel like my stats were definitely strong enough, and I feel bad about the notion that I was placed on USC’s version of a “waiting list” because I genuinely feel like I had what it took to be a fall admit.
Hello all! Does anyone know if next weeks financial aid notification is based off of the FAFSA excepted contribution amount or is it some other USC financial aid? I hope that makes sense.
