USC Class of 2024 Applicants Thread

Any news on Scholarship results?

crickets

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, went to school in the Midwest and then moved to California. I have to say, I have never looked back when it comes to where I live—people I missed, but not the Midwest. Last week it rained all week and in addition to Coronavirus we were stuck inside. While I have loved and our rainy days in the past and welcomed the rain because we need it, a week of rain that forcing us to be inside reminded me what I don’t miss about the long winters. The sunshine makes people happy. While that doesn’t apply to everyone, it is something I do not take for granted. The people from LA are from all over and those that have been here forever still appreciate it. The city is spread out with lots of little pockets of cool areas to explore. There is now a train that you can hop on right outside USC and take it straight down to the Santa Monica Pier. Of course LA traffic is notoriously bad, its no worse than what I experienced in Chicago. Sounds like you have great options that you can’t go wrong where ever you pick. Good luck!

@CADREAMIN what is the Director’s Scholarship you mentioned? I don’t see that one in the list at the link you posted in #2808

Congrats! I had to say this just because of your username. Bangtan Mom here!

@USCFightOn2020

100% yes, congrats!!!

@CAtransplant
the Director’s is a 4K scholarship, maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned it…I haven’t seen many, but when in play most recently was when someone interviewed was bumped all the way down to that. A fabulous parent posted honestly about going from Trustee potential to 4K. Yikes. Student obviously had sites on Ivy’s so it was ok for all involved and we appreciated her posting about it. Rather than giving nothing, it was sorta like a consolation prize “thanks for playing today.” :slight_smile:

Scholarships…

Looks like they are waiting till dinner time again.

@findcollege2020 Prepare yourself, because it will most likely not be based on the FAFSA expected family contribution. We have found it to be generous, but not that generous. They do crunch their own #s to determine what they expect your family to contribute in terms of direct payments, work study and loans. Good luck…

I remember reading about that and I can only wonder how that interview went. What they saw in person must have greatly differed from what was on paper. The scholarship kids in general seem to be such an accomplished bunch and all the ones I’ve met at USC seem like great kids who really want to be there.

And speaking of random scholarships, we are ones who had the surprise of receiving the USC Associates Scholarship. It was a great surprise. $18,000 plus they threw on a $2000 university scholarship for a nice $20K. As full pay but not super rich parents, it was really good news.

@jimbobcharlie Wow… that’s a huge difference. From 7558 admitted last year to 9535 admitted this year, and from 11.4% admitted to nearly 16%. They are clearly now more concerned about their projected yield rate due to COVID-19, Varsity Blues and all the other issues in today’s current college admissions climate.

I just clicked on article by @jimbocharlie above, whoa they upped the number accepted, I am sure every college is adjusting their yield forecast with the world situation.

Almost 60,000 students applied for admission for the 2020 fall term. Of those who applied, 9,535 have been offered admission — an acceptance rate of just under 16%.

Almost 2000 more admitted, compared to 7, 588 in 2019.

Yeah that seems crazy. If the yield is higher than expected they could be in big trouble with housing. Maybe the numbers include spring admits.

@treealum I think of you everytime I sum up the scholarships for someone! Hope all is well. You are the only one posting on here over all my years to get that fab Associates! I don’t think any of us paid it any attention until you got it. Such a great thing!

lol I think three of us reacted at exactly the same time to the numbers! Great minds think alike, ha.

If the scholarships aren’t out now, do you guys think they’ll come out at 7?

That may affect getting bumped to fall if spring too - meaning less spring bumps to fall and returning to normal figures for that after last year’s madness. Moving so many last year probably messed up their planning numbers, so more admits now may be to prevent that space in fall they had last year from occurring again. Never in 20 years had they moved up more than a handful.

@bluewhaledude They love 6 - 6:30, don’t know why. I thought it was because office was closed so no one could call. But geez, no one is there anyway now, so why not post them?!!! :slight_smile:

well with only about 10 per year, it’s not a lot! The best part (Other than the $$$) is the invite she gets to a fancy USC Associates tailgate at a football game!

All is well here (given the circumstances). My daughter loves USC so being home now and doing online classes is a bit sad. But USC has handled the coronavirus situation in a very impressive manner - taking care of students who couldn’t leave and providing a lot of support for going online with classes and also likely partial refunds for housing and dining. #FightOn !!!

@treealum @cadreamin
DS18, who received Presidential scholarship and early Jan admit, had a classmate who was offered the Associates after regular decision admit but he headed to Michigan. BTW also have a senior who was a spring admit. I am sad for how my seniors final semester has ended and hoping for some kind of graduation celebration. He was offered a really great job after his internship last summer so we are thrilled with his Trojan experience overall.
