USC Class of 2024 Applicants Thread

@hope3355 You can discuss such with your assigned advisor later… once you know who that may be. That would require switching Schools within USC and thus require’s the approval of Marshall admission too. It is more involved than just switching majors within a School and a process to actually apply. Or just email Marshall admssions and ask about that internal transfer process: busadm@marshall.usc.edu

There is a process to switch to Marshall. You cannot switch to Marshall before you start or at orientation, you will need to apply and complete a couple classes before approved. It can be done, but just not immediately, this prevents any pre-planned major switcheroo after accepted.

My d is a National Merit Finalist and has also been awarded the National Merit $2500 Scholarship. She needs to accept or decline this scholarship money by Apr 6 2020. If she accepts this money from NMSC, will she still be awarded the 1/2 tuition by University of Southern California if she names USC as her first choice school? Please help. I am not able to talk to anyone at NMSC because of Covid19 and no one at USC Financial Aid office can give me a definitive answer.

We had similar questions about this last year and learned that you are probably better off declining the $2500 because you will still get 1/2 tuition and $1000/year from the NMSF as a credit on your USC bill as long as your daughter maintains a certain number of hours and is not on academic probation. If you prefer the lump sum up front of $2500, then you can take that instead. My daughter just renewed her NMF scholarship for next year. $4k seemed much better than $2500 to us.

@onceaslug great info! I didn’t know you could decline the $2500 and still get the USC NMS $4000.

Does she need to renew her NMF scholarship through USC or through NMSC?

@lkg4answers The NMSC sent her a letter (to our home address) asking her to go online to renew it. Super easy.

But can one still get the 1/2 tuition at USC even after accepting the $2500 from NMSC?

Where is the info about USC NMS $4000 ($1000 a year) published on USC site? I was not able to find it at all.

CADREAMIN,

Thank you for your kindness. Where did you get the information? Would you please let me know? Are you an expert on USC?

Sorry for asking a silly question. D got a letter about $2,500 as well, but won’t be attending USC. From what I see here, there is an alternative to that one-time $2,500: a yearly $1000 scholarship for a total of $4,000. But that yearly alternative is for USC students only, not available at other colleges, correct? Thanks!

@typiCAmom If letter was from USC, it applies to USC only.

I apologize @lkg4answers if I misled you. I looked back at emails and posts from last year to be sure I was answering correctly and I know that there was an option to pick $1000/year somewhere, but I can’t find it. I did find an email from NMSC where we ACCEPTED the scholarship so I was wrong about that. I can only tell you that somewhere along the way we were given a choice and took the $1k/year. My daughter is also a Presidential scholar. Hope that helps.

@WWWard, sorry I wasn’t specific, the letter announcing the $2,500 was from the NMSC.

@bibiabiyeye hey I was also admitted to the wbb program

Holy crud the aid is awful for a 0 EFC Questbridge RD…

Absolutely insulted by the “aid.” Extending their promise to affordability has got to be one of the biggest lies that’s ever been told. My net cost is more than double my FAFSA EFC. I don’t know how anyone could possibly afford this school. Is it even worth appealing at this point?

Oh my god, something is definitely wrong with the aid. All of the questbridge people and many other people were screwed over with their aid.

Even after 8k of loans and work study, 10K left to just pay.

@HKimPOSSIBLE I was afraid of this outcome. You can contact USC FA, but if if this offer holds, your no-loan full-ride options are much better. Thank goodness you have them!

Aggghk something is so definitely wrong.

@CollegeOdyssey2001 Everyone in the Questbridge group chat that was admitted to USC has been screwed over. In fact, some people who had higher EFCs were given MUCH better aid than I was.

If you disagree with their FA offering or assessment, contact them and ask how they arrived it. If your financial situation has alterred over the past few months, detail such to them. It is always worth inquiring or even appealing, especially if you really want to attend USC. If your parents combined annual income is less than $80K, you are supposed to at least receive an university grant or their grant plus federal Pell grant equivalent to the cost of total tution. That would just leave room/board, fees and misc costs to cover. And that could be potentially covered, if they offer no additional grants, via work study, loans and your family.
