USC Class of 2028 — Regular & Early Action Decisions

I would still mention NMF on applications. Your son is still in the running for RD. Hang in there. My son was absolutely devastated with his deferral, but he got in RD and is doing very well – making straight As, so far. And, yes, he got into McCarthy housing, too.

He did list NMSF, for sure! Just surprising that is the current advice. I am praying for his ED2 results now to end the confidence crisis. He really does love USC so much, they have classes in his somewhat niche engineering interest which is uncommon in undergrad programs. I thought his passion for it would make a difference. Oh well.

Hang in there. I am praying for you. It will be a long 2 months. Get him excited about other schools. Find a safety school that he can like. If he gets into USC, it will be a pleasant surprise. If not, he will be OK. By the time RD came around, my son was already super-excited about his plan B – so much so that he had to wrestle with his decision once he got into USC. Fight On!

I am sorry for the disappointment of parents of students who weren’t accepted, and the students. It can be devastating for students who have put a lot of effort into their applications and have achieved a lot during high school.

However, posts implying that minority students who were accepted were not as qualified and were accepted based on their demographic violates College Confidential policies.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, banning the use of race and ethnicity in admissions, making such a claim is not only disparaging of these students and belittling of their achievement, but also a false claim.

Any such claim will be edited, or the post will be deleted in its entirety.

I would expect very few to withdraw given there being no downside to wait for RD. Maybe you’ll get some who will get in to their dream school, but for most, they’ll want to keep USC as an option.

I know it’s disappointing to the hardworking students who didn’t get in. Many of them will get in RD. It looks like a lot were cs or engineering majors. With less than 3k accepted overall, there just weren’t enough spots. USC is putting together a class of students majoring in business, history, biology, global health, philosophy, dance etc. Maybe half of the early applicants applied to cs or engineering. We don’t know.

One of my most humbling moments as a parent occurred during a visit to a college counselor with my oldest (not usc) daughter. The counselor looked at her profile and said you have great grades, test scores and extracurriculars. I was sure she was going to say that my D would get in anywhere. Instead she said and there are thousands and thousands of students just like you. I was insulted until I realized she was right.

I disagree, I think there will be quite a few withdrawals by those who require a scholarship to attend (and aren’t NMF).

Hopefully RD works out. My son was also deferred and his overall application is very strong. NMSF (he did mention it in the Honors section), 1550+, varsity sports, club leader, other EC’s in and out of school that he truly enjoys. Large competitive public school that sends kids to USC every year (at least 5). Applied to Marshall. I am hopeful for RD. Majority of EA will be trying to hook a candidate. In his case I think they (correctly) predict that he will yield, that he is not an Ivy type kid and is competitive for the UC’s. Yesterday was disappointing but still hopeful

Agree. Like Pascal’s Theory, there is basically zero down side to waiting RD. Fee is already paid. No new essays. Even if someone lacks 90k/yr to afford going, they can always turn down the acceptance in May.

Did everyone who applied for EA receive an email about the status update? My child hasn’t.

Have you logged into the portal? Maybe the email got into spam.

She has run her own 501(c)(3) for over three years. It has taken up an insane amount of her time (although this is her choice!). I am happy (and relieved) to see that colleges seem to care about service and advocacy and not just test scores and grades! I don’t think she would have done anything different if they didn’t, but it is still nice to see that they recognize its value.

Exactly! My son volunteers since the very beginning of middle school in the same place. Weekends, holiday breaks etc
There it goes 1000 hours - or more!
Glad they have acknowledged that😄

My son was accepted into BCA (business of cinematic arts).which is a combined degree from Marshall school of business and SCA.

GPA is on 100 scale (103.5), 10 APs, make dancer for over a decade, number of ECs in DEI work, research, started his own podcast, many leadership positions, his own start ups, business related internships.

He is super excited and so are we !!

Anyone else here accepted into BCA ?

Keep in mind that the acceptance rate is very misleading. Likely close to half the applicants are below the middle 50th percent gpa and SAT scores and have little shot. My kid’s college counselor told her she had about a 50% shot because she was at the 75% percentile and had good extras. Essays and activities count heavily at USC as well. My advice is if you are in the 25th percentile or above you should stick it out!

EA is used to “fill” underrepresented majors so if you are a popular major like business of engineering you likely have a better shot RD.

Hmmmm . . . that is an interesting theory. Maybe the CDS from the last few years might offer some insight. It does seem that if a family can’t afford the $90K unless they got a scholarship and they now know they aren’t in the running for any scholarship (other than NMF), they would simply not go forward lest they get in and just have to pass. What’s the point in that?

I was replying to threejs who posted: “I disagree, I think there will be quite a few withdrawals by those who require a scholarship to attend (and aren’t NMF).”

My guess is that the parents may want their student to withdraw app to avoid the angst of not being able to afford it, but I think most students want to know if they get in or not. As mentioned, fee is paid, so might as well get their $ worth and let it ride.

We know two families personally who are withdrawing for this reason.

My DD is applying for engineering school, excellent stats, GPA 4.0, weighted 4.9 out of 5.0. NMSF, 12 APs, mostly 5s. Deferred, disappointed even though USC is not our dream school.
