How cool that your daughter is working for Unity!! My daughter just worked at the Game Developer Conference in SF this week. Incredible experience and a ton of Unity content/experiences.
Switching into most majors is very easy. There are some schools that are more difficult to change to and that includes Viterbi. And unfortunately CS is one of the few majors that you can’t switch into. This is the case at many schools (including Michigan) and new to USC. I’m not sure if at USC you can switch to a different major in Viterbi and then into CS.
Congratulations!
Yes — they have been so good to her. BTW, she took an internship with them first. So, to anyone who would turn up his/her nose at the prospect of an internship in lieu of a “real” job, don’t. If you prove yourself, you will get hired quickly.
She took a paid internship with Unity upon graduation – and even the internship pay was enough to afford a studio apartment in downtown SFO within walking distance of Unity. I think the internship was 8 or 12 weeks and she was hired permanently after that.
My other son also took a paid internship in his field immediately after graduating from USC, was hired on after the internship, and has been with the company for 10 years.
USC holds off campus events for admitted students who cannot travel to its campus as well as online events.
@Southoftheriver, if you are still around, could you share a little about Price School of Public Policy? Had you compared it to Luskin?
So presidential is only for NMF right not for semi finalists? DD is spring admit.
Yes, but almost all semifinalists become finalists. I assume that has already been announced?
Yes
My D22 did compare Price
You mean presidential has already been announced?
Congrats on having such excellent choices! We visited over 20 campuses, most of them on the East coast, with my D23. USC’s campus was her favorite. The campus itself is beautiful, but she particularly loved how compact and walkable the campus is. In 10-15 minutes, depending on how fast you walk, you can get from one end to the other. The village was also impressive with Target,Trader Joes, Amazon pick-up, and host of other restaurants and cafes. During the campus tour, she was struck by the campus vibe–students were just super friendly and energetic. And yes–the sunny weather was an added bonus and she doesn’t miss the cold gray winters on the east coast one bit.
All the best in your decision–you really can’t go wrong!
Thanks for your input, was truely helpful.
Wow, this is definitely surprising. I didn’t get into CS at Michigan but I was told I could dual degree with a liberal arts major and computer engineering. Could I double major with one of Viterbi’s CS majors?
No – I mean the announcements of National Merit Finalist from the NMSC should have already been announced. But, yes, it looks like Trustee and Presidential Scholarships from EA have also been announced already.
Yes, NMF was… a long time ago. But presidential I saw someone say she got notified today, so will call them tommorow. But do semi finalists also qualify? or is it just Finalists?
Just finalists.
thanks
Yes, USC’s scholarship is for finalists, not semi-finalists
Finalists were notified around Feb 9. Two days ago, NMSC sent out notifications to the students who were awarded the National Merit Scholars $2500 scholarship.
Oops — D22 did compare UCLA and USC’s public policy schools and felt good about either choice. Price has turned out even better than her expectations.
She loves that it is small, and provides that very intimate experience within a major research university. She was able to jump in immediately and take classes in her major and has developed wonderful relationships with professors and students. Price also sets them up with an alum who provides professional advice 1-1.
Advising is amazing — she can see and text her advisor frequently. She was able to really go over the pros and cons of accelerated Masters program or adding a minor and got great advice. She easily added an Applied Analytics minor in the Viterbi School. As a sophomore she was asked to participate in a research class where they put together policy information for a real-world client.
Two Centers — the Center for the Political Future and the Center for Inclusive Democracy are amazing and have played as much of a role in her experience as her classes. CPF has a fellows program of high-powered people in the field who come in to teach small study groups and become mentors.
She had no trouble with internships for the summer — is a Schaeffer fellow and is going to DC ( turned down an internship at Brookings).
I could go on and on and am happy to answer more questions. I can’t imagine any university providing more/better opportunities.
