USC Noncustodial parent wavier CSS

USC is asking me for a third party noncustodial letter for financial aid.

  1. Who wrote your letter for you and any tips on what my letter should say and how long it should be?

  2. After i submit it, what were the next steps? Does USC ask for anymore documentation?

  3. I have had no contact with my father for over 7 years but he was legally required to provide child support. The way he paid was through direct deposit that automatically took it out of his paycheck, so there was no contact what so ever with him. I have no idea where he lives, what he does, or what his number is. If its not too personal, did anyones parent provide child support, and if so, did that affect the waiver process?

I had my son’s guidance counselor write the letter to support the waiver. You say your father was required to pay child support and that he paid it. My guess is your waiver won’t be approved. My ex was an indigent drug addict who never paid child support and blew through the divorce settlement in one year. Even though he had limited contact with my son, there was no way he could contribute financially to my sons education.

There’s is documentation of the financial support that will have to be provided.

@GamerGal27 whats your guess on what happens if i wont be approved? its not like i can contact him. i dont know where he lives, what his email is, or his number.

You might outline all the things you have done to make contact with him - asked grandparents or other relatives, mutual friends of your parents, internet search. It doesn’t mean he will pay, but at least it will show that you tried.

@CADREAMIN documentation of the child support? he stopped paying once i turned 18. im 21 now

Oh assumed you were high schooler as in a freshman applicant still getting support.

@mavsp1 It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any contact with him. I know this totally sucks. I suggest you talk to the financial aid office for advice. You aren’t the first one to have this issue.

Because you can imagine how many people would say “we haven’t heard from him/her” to avoid including that source.
