USC senior Rebecca Soni pulled off one of the biggest upsets thus far in the National Aquatics Center at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, dethroning 200-meter breaststroke world record holder Australian Leisel Jones by shattering the world standard and capturing the gold medal Friday morning in China.

<p>Former Trojan swimming greats Erik Vendt and Klete Keller, members of the U.S. 4x200-meter freestyle relay, clinched gold medals when the Americans took first in the event’s final Wednesday morning at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, extending an amazing USC streak: a Trojan has won a gold medal in every summer Olympics from 1912.

In history, athletes who attended USC before, during or after their Olympic appearance now have collected 114 golds, 67 silvers and 59 bronzes. </p>

<p>USC has sent more athletes to the Olympic Games than any other university. Since its first Olympian in 1904, there have been 385 Olympic athletes with a USC affiliation.

<p>Rebecca Soni, a senior communications major at USC, set the world record today in the 200-meter breaststroke and earned her first Olympic gold medal. Her upset victory came over previous world record holder Leisel Jones from Australia.</p>

<p>Soni’s time of 2:20.22 eclipsed the old mark of 2:20.54. Jones led on the first two turns, but Soni edged ahead on the third. As she cruised to victory in the final stretch, NBC’s announcer screamed, “This could be the upset of these Olympic games in the swimming pool!”

USC’s overall medal count this Olympics is up to five – three golds, one silver, one bronze.

<p>nicole davis, who is the main libero on the US women’s indoor volleyball team, is an alum and the women’s indoor team will be playing for a medal after this semifinal round (the color depends on if they win in the semis)</p>

<p>SC is proud of their olympians. Forty participated in the 2008 Olympics and brought home 21 medals. Nine gold, 10 silver and 2 bronze were awarded.
