USC or NYU?

Do I have a shot at either?

I’m thinking I may actually get into NYU now… I have about a 3.6 weighted GPA with a 2070 right now (gonna retake to get reading up, right now 580-740-750) and Varsity Lacrosse.

Thinking about getting into Journalism, or a career in a more creative field.

It would be good to know your ECs, achievements, geographic location, etc. Numbers are only a small part.

That said, based on your current numbers alone, I’d say you’re a reach for NYU / USC. If you can get the Reading score up to 650+, they’ll become matches. But again, these are just numbers. Great ECs, recs and essays can compensate for relatively weak GPA/SAT scores.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but as of now I’d say both USC and NYU are reaches for you.

A 3.6W is below average for both schools and your unweighted GPA is usually what colleges consider.
For reference USC and NYU admits had between a 3.6-3.7 UW GPA.

Going on the 1600 SAT scale you have a 1320 which is good but still below average for both schools.

If you take your SATs again and raise that reading score you’'ll have a much better chance.

Good luck.

My daughter had a 4.3 weighted GPA, 2160 SAT, great EC’s and recs, etc. and was rejected by USC. She applied as a print journalism major. The Annenberg School of Journalism only takes about 160 freshman a year so you’d better have an awesome application. Right now I would realistically say your stats will not get you into either school. Don’t worry, there are many great journalism schools out there.

IU- Bloomington may be a good fit. Suny Purchase has a decent program too.
