USC SCA CLASS OF 2024 - Fall 2020 Application

@CAtransplant You’re welcome. I’m not sure, but there seem to be enough to dabble in multiple areas of production, even as someone like my older daughter who was only an SCA minor candidate. As for editing, she took two courses. One was a prerequisite for the higher level.

You will have your own set requirements as CAMS… and more still if you minor in anything. But if you only major in CAMS, you should have a ton of space to take a # of other SCA courses - including production ones. CAMS in that way can be whatever you make it… to a point. You cannot replicate all that a production major can, but you can get fairly close.

Recently was admitted as an Animation and Digital Arts Major. I haven’t been able to find any more Animation students in the class of '24. Please lmk if you know of any so I can link up with them : )

Hey its me again…weird question but does anyone feel comfortable with sharing their “why USC” essay with me or what they covered in it? Or at least advising me links of USC to look at further. I am trying to write an appeal letter. Thank you!

@CindyLeuWho I will PM you.

@WWWard do you mind pm’ing me too! We’re planning to appeal as well

@diane2350 Sure.

Kinda late to the party, but I thought I’d jump in in case someone finds my data useful. :wink:

This…is way longer than I hoped it would be. Oh well. I’m a writer, not an editor. :slight_smile: My apologies for the long post.

I was accepted into Writing for Screen and Television for regular decision. (!!!) I can’t remember if I said which was my second choice, but I also applied to Film Production and did not get in. I did not get the veritax email, but I did get an SCA faculty interview a few months ago.

MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF ADVICE
Start your portfolio EARLY. You’re not going to have something ready to simply upload. I started a month before the application was due, and it just about killed me. Get as much of a head start on this as possible.
Tell a story. You didn’t just “appear” in twelfth grade as your current self. You had a path, you had events in your life. One thing led to another - connect the dots for your application. You’ll be memorable and understandable, and that’s what you want from admissions. I did this by introducing the committee to characters that I had created during key points in my life, and how they represented what I was feeling and where I was in my journey.

Statistics:
White, female, Massachusetts (w/ some ex-patriot experience)
GPA - UW: 3.9, W: 5.05
SAT: 1460 (730 in each category)
2 SAT Subject Tests: Chinese Language w/ Listening (690), Literature (760)
APs: 10, have completed 6
Track: Honors classes and AP classes, with six courses every year
High School: private Christian school, 40 students in my class
No legacy, no connection to USC.

Extracurriculars:
Three musicals (actor, costume designer, and videographer), founder & editor of the ongoing writing club, internships on indie film sets, launched and managed my school’s first film festival, NHS Officer (two years), created a short film that was part of the selection for the November Independent Shorts Awards in LA, three rounds of competitive theater, a sport every year (that is, a different sport every year, as I move with the grace of a confused ostrich), and writing online for the past few years.

Rec Letters:
I go to a small school, and have been taking Latin as a lone student with the same teacher since freshman year. She got to know me very well and wrote one for me. I have also been mentored over the past few years by a film producer (not a USC grad), and he wrote a letter for me as well. Those were probably the best ones, if I had to guess. I didn’t get to see them.

Why USC: The long and short of it is that I really value how film is a viable career path at USC. I mentioned how the other schools I visited were more focused on film being an art form than a storytelling medium, and I also mentioned their Business in Cinematic Arts program specifically to show that I had done research into the school.

Any other things I did?

  • I visited campus the spring of my sophomore year, and went through both the info session and tour of the whole campus as well as the SCA info session and tour.
  • I went to a local event here in Boston, where I connected with my admissions officer, told her a little about my school (as it is new and small and different from other Christian schools - e.g. no building, no resources, currently renting space in a Jewish synagogue), and left my resume with her.
  • I also updated her later on with additional information about what I was doing, and asked her a questions when I had them.

If anyone is interested in the materials I wrote for the application, I would be more than happy to send you the documents. :smile: I really hope this helps!

Anybody else in WST??? Can we start a Discord server or something? I’d love to get to know you guys!

My D got accepted both USC SCA & NYU Tisch major in Interactive&Game design. Any suggetion ?

Can i see the materials you wrote please?

Can I see the materials you wrote please?

@DulwichSZ Both offer great programs and are excellent schools. I believe that SCA is still ranked #1 for Games. But overall, they are very different universities and in very different environments. NYU is a collection of separated buildings spread out among the Village in NYC. To most, it does not even look like an actual university. It lacks many elements that many consider critical to the normal university environment. USC has a traditional college campus and offers more of the traditional college experiences. To me, they likely appeal to very different people. Both of my daughters were initially interested in the idea of NYU until they actually visited. After visiting, neither could see themselves living & functioning within that type of urban environment. But NYU of course appeals to many. The real question is… what are you looking for in terms of your own specific college experience?

I’m a little late to the party but here are my stats (please ignore my grammar and punctuation, it’s my weak spot).

ACCEPTED to my first choice major: film and video production
I did have an interview with an SCA professor
I was not interviewed for merit scholarships
I am a female from Michigan

STATS:
ACT: 31
GPA: 3.7 UW, 4.03 W
AP: AP United States History (5), AP Psychology (4), AP World Literature, AP Shakespeare, AP Government and Politics, AP Art History (Note: my school really doesn’t let many sophomores take AP classes, so along with my AP courseload I will be graduating with 8 honors classes)

EXTRACURRICULARS and other stuff that I think helped

  • One of the presidents (we called it “executive producer”) of my school’s film leadership board.
  • Film conservatory
  • Captain of the cheer team, varsity for 3 years.
  • part of my work as a cheerleader was to teach girls in my school’s elementary school how to cheer and I helped them cheer at middle school football games. This counted as community service and I did it for around 50ish (i think) hours over the course of three years
  • Horseback riding for four years
  • After school film program (20ish film students get together after school every day to create a feature movie that will premiere at a local movie theater). I worked as the script supervisor, first assistant director, then writer + director my senior year (before corona ended my school yr)
  • I worked at the contemporary art museum in my city as part of their teen council. I worked together with other teens to put on free events surrounding the arts and social justice for local teenagers, I was set to lead a free event for LGBTQIA+ teenagers (before corona happened and I lost my job :(. )
  • I worked during the summer at a sub shop
  • I interned on a local political campaign to help canvass, make phone calls, etc.
  • member of my school’s film appreciation club
  • I did two summer programs surrounding film and writing, one at Emerson College, the other at UNCSA.
  • I was the head screenwriter at our school’s student news club.
  • 2nd chair cellist for my school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, I played cello for a total of six years before quitting to pursue film more steadily.
  • I have in total taken 6 film classes offered by my schools’ film program

AWARDS
Mainly local, enough to beef up my resume a bit but not earth-shattering or anything. I was accepted to multiple film festivals, placed in the scholastic art and writing awards (two silver keys, one for film the other for writing and two honorable mentions for film at the regional level), and I had my writing published in my school’s newspaper and literary magazine.

ESSAYS/VIDEO SUPPLEMENT
I won’t lie to you, I thought my essays were pretty good. I love writing and I consider it my strong suit. I worked on the supplements for USC for probably close to 20 hours alone over the course of two months. My personal statement is about womanhood and finding my voice. My video supplement was about a dystopian society where the government secretly tracks women’s pregnancies to prevent abortions. The leader of this top-secret government program finds out that his own teenage daughter is pregnant through this service.

LETTERS OF REC
one from my film teacher, the others were from my APUSH and APLIT teachers.

OTHER SCHOOLS
Accepted: USC, University of Michigan, Boston University, Michigan State University, and the University of San Francisco
Rejected: Chapman, Wesleyan
Waitlisted: Pitzer

@wwward Thx u so much!!!

@DulwichSZ you’re welcome

@DulwichSZ

USC and NYU were DS’s top choices for interactive media and game design, and we looked into them pretty carefully. We visited both campuses. DS spent an afternoon and evening at NYU’s interactive media program and spent time at USC with IMGD students. (DD is SCA 2020.)

We thought both programs were very strong. DS knew he didn’t want to focus on the programming side of games, and NYU and USC were far and away the best for what he wanted. DS thought NYU’s program was creative, slightly more oriented toward visual design, but really liked its indie focus. For USC, he especially liked how IMGD is enveloped within SCA, was drawn to its narrative resources and tight community.

One general complaint we’ve heard about NYU is that schools are siloed, and that unlike at USC it can be very hard/impossible to take classes in other parts of the university. Tisch is a great part of NYU, but we weren’t sure about the community feel, with interactive media at NYU at their Brooklyn campus and the rest of Tisch at the main campus.

We have heard that the NYU program is about twice the size of the USC program. Both are pretty dang small needles to thread as an applicant.

DS much prefers NYC to LA as a city, but the IMGD program at USC ended up being his first choice. He spent the morning along with all the other eager new admits trying to sign up for housing – and was still happy!

For us as parents, it ended up mattering more than we had expected that both of our children would share the USC experience, and of SCA in particular. That was true even before the coronavirus. You may want to factor proximity and closeness to family and friends into your decision as well. Best of luck in your decision!

@CAtransplant Just checking back in with you and your daughter. Did you guys commit? We’re still waiting on financials. :neutral: Would be great if our girls connect tho. Another gal from my daughter’s HS got into SCA!

@VivienL I will send you a private message :smile:

@WWWard do you know if there’s a way to map out a potential first year course schedule for Cinema and Media Studies majors? I have seen the list of required courses here https://catalogue.usc.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=11&poid=11211 but some schools have a sample four-year plan showing what a typical student’s course schedule would look like including the courses for their major and also gen. ed requirements.
