USC SCA CLASS OF 2024 - Fall 2020 Application

@CAtransplant you’re welcome

Anyone having success joining the SCA Zoom meet?

@VivienL we joined it - were you able to get in? Hope so!

@VivienL and @CAtransplant yep, we joined too, one of the better virtual sessions, nice to be welcomed and congratulated by Dean and admin (175 participants), to see admission video, and thought breakout (CAMS 30 participants) was especially good to provide small group experience with a few faculty and current students

@saltyandpeppery I thought it was good too. Though in the CAMS breakout, it was a little confusing because the prof wanted each admitted student to introduce themselves and ask a question if they had one but then they weren’t able to get through very many students in that way. But it was good to hear the current students speak about their experiences and answer questions, and all of the faculty and admin of SCA were welcoming and warm and likable, I thought.

Did any of y’all hear anything back?

@nycbebe, my daughter was also accepted into Writing for Screen and TV in SCA at USC, and we were all in shock because it’s rumored to only take 1-2% of its applicants. They really read every recommendation (5 in total if you apply to that program) and the prompts and two scripts, resumé, etc. They said these 25 or so students were hand-picked…they are building a class of collaborative and interesting writers with a passion for script-writing. So exciting…congrats to everyone admitted into SCA and into the John Wells Division, Writing for Screen & Television!

@CindyLeuWho Remember, I got into Columbia College CHICAGO. Not Columbia University, haha. And I don’t know why I got into USC but not Chapman. It beats me.

As a parent, I can still vividly recall some of the various discussions – and especially those involving certain warnings – that I had with each of my two daughters before they headed off to USC. One key area of discussion involved alcohol and drug use and warnings about drug interactions.

I suggest that both parents and incoming freshmen… regardless of the future college or university… review this linked to article below about the 4 drug-related deaths that unfortunately occured last year at USC. The cruel reality is that some students will be more susceptible to issues related to stress management or even depression. Some students will also look to college as a time to experiment further with alcohol and various drugs. Some college programs are even more likely to promote elevated tensions and added pressure among those taking those majors. All of this should be considered and possibly discussed in detail further.

While it may be impossible to prevent all such dangerous outcomes, as detailed in this article, one key step in the right direction is further and even extended education on the topic and some frank / direct communication between students and their parents and among student peers themseleves.

Hopefully this article will simply enhance some reflection on managing the college experience…

Son received Dean Daley’s letter yesterday, indicating all freshmen SCA classes will be online, and detailing academic plan for other grades and each major.

SCA shared on parent Zoom tonight that the incoming fall 2020 freshman class is 163 (said on previous call that they targeted 150), and the breakdown by division is:

Animation and Digital Arts: 20
Cinema and Media Studies 31
Interactive Media & Games 24
Media Arts & Practice 9
Film & Television Production 56
Writing for Screen and Television 23

That was me who asked the question about that in the Q&A - I’ve been curious about those numbers for a while so I was glad to finally learn them.

Thanks for sharing those #s above. Very interesting.

@saltandpeppery You just discovered a buried treasure! There have been so many questions about those figures over the years. Time to copy paste into my “USC files,” that info’s a keeper!

Yep, I remember seeing much speculation about the division #’s (thank you, @WWWard post #122) and was excited that SCA Admissions finally revealed the data last night. CAMS, at 31 actual, is the biggest difference to the prior guess of 75. IMGD and Screenwriting are both much larger than previously guesstimated. And MAP is now on the map.

IMGD is actually a bigger program than it’s been in prior years. My son is a guppy this fall, and said they normally had ~18 each year, but they expanded this year.

@CADREAMIN yes I know there’d been much speculation and I was particularly curious since my daughter is in the freshman class at SCA this year so I asked the question in the Q&A - they were not answering it at first, answering all the others and I was wondering if they weren’t going to but I think they were just compiling the exact info and then did put the answer in later on!

CAMS was always rumored to be the biggest program in terms of enrollment by major… so that is certainly a big shift. I wonder if that was their true aim for this cycle or whether it is a a significant miss in terms of yield prediction. Missing in terms of yield guesses could certainly be a factor during this pandemic for most programs and even most colleges and universities.

SCA is certainly as highly selective as always thought though. Now if they will just publish those application #s and admit rates overall and by program. Then we would finally have a more clear picture. But glad they are at least being more forthcoming with info finally.

If someone had access to SCA graduation programs from prior years, I’d think we could see how many students are graduating with each major, to fact check changes in program size over time.
