USC vs SUNY Buffalo

I am an International student, accepted from SUNY Buffalo and Viterbi School USC for MS in Aerosapace. Inspite of the better ranking of USC, I have some doubts in my mind. Please help me with the following queries…

USC is pretty much more expensive than SUNY Buffalo. Is it worth spending extra money on USC?

What is the scope of On-campus employment at both the schools?

USC has a long list of companies coming to their campus for recruitment
USC Career Planning and Placement Center

On the other hand I could not find any such list on the SUNY Buffalo site. Do we have sufficient recruitment opportunities at Buffalo?

please help…

If you can afford USC, I would definitely go there. I have not been to SUNY Buffalo, but it is very COLD in Buffalo, NY in the winter. USC has a great reputation. SUNY is a state school whereas USC is a private school. USC has a wonderful alumni network for jobs.

Thanks mdcissp.

Do we have sufficient on-campus jobs in USC to support living and other expenses? Do u have any idea about the alumni network of SUNY Buffalo? Also, is studying in a private school negative in any way?

Weather is nt much of an issue fr me.

I don’t know any details about SUNY Buffalo as I was never there. USC is famous for having a wonderful alumni network. From what I heard, there are on-campus jobs at USC. However, I seriously doubt that it will pay all of your expenses. If you need a job to pay your expenses, perhaps you can try to get a job with a regular company during the day, study at USC at night, and then have the company pay your tuition bills.
This is a fringe benefit available at some large U.S. companies. Studying at a private school is NOT a negative. It is a POSITIVE because the classes are smaller and you get more individual attention than found in a large public university. IT sounds like you are concerned about paying for USC. I suggest that you contact USC financial aid and career center to see if you are comfortable with the cost involved and then make a decision. We love USC.
The engineering building at USC is very nice and new.

Okay, I have been to both USC and SUNY Buffalo, and was a student at USC last year. Consider SUNY Buffalo to be NY’s “Berkeley”, the “Crown Jewel” of the SUNY system. It is an excellent institution, though unfortunately isn’t that well known (or respected) outside of NY.

However, personally if I were you (and provided that money is not a big factor), I would chose USC. Excellent location (compared to Buffalo) being in Southern California, superb quality of education, and of course the Trojan Family network. I am also a big believer in private vs. public benefits. And I hope you will not take offence to this, but there is also a sizeable and noticeable Indian community at USC as well.

SUNY Buffalo is not to be dismissed, but from personal experience I would chose USC Viterbi over it. Regardless, you got into some excellent schools, and good luck wherever you end up!

Can you please name a few companies that offer this kind of service. Also, is being a US national mandatory for applying for such jobs.

Thanks for replying anyway. I greatly appreciate your effort.

Is there any peculiar reason for SUNY Buffalo not being respected outside NY and does this mean that getting into companies outside NY will be difficult (keeping in mind the number of Aerospace industries in NY)?
Also, can you please comment on the quality of education and On-campus employment available at SUNY Buffalo?

Thanks.

I suggest that you look on the web sites of individual U.S. aerospace companies (Boeing, for example) and see what the job requirements are and what the benefits are (i.e. does the company pay for a masters degree in a field relevant to the job). I am not an expert, but I would think that large U.S. companies want U.S. citizenship, unless the job itself is in India (could be possible since there is some outsourcing of jobs to India from the U.S.). Also, I suggest that you research aerospace companies-where are they located, for example? Again, if you can afford USC, that would be my first choice.

there are a ton of on campus jobs in usc. however you cannot depend on them for living expenses such as rent. considering rent is pretty high around the area. the salary could be just for personal expenses such as clothes, movies, etc.

ravivij, name recognition greatly helps Berkeley’s reputation, and for some reason, out-of-staters tend to under-appreciate SUNY Buffalo. I am not too familiar with SUNY’s alumni network, but I can assure you that if you graduate from USC Viterbi, you shouldn’t have a problem landing a job, so long as you try.

My advice? Go to USC.

I grew up in Buffalo, and now live in S CA. I am very familiar with both SUNY Buffalo & USC. If I were you, as long as money is not an issue, I would definitely go to USC. The alumni network at USC is famous, plus there is so much more to do in L.A., and of course, the weather here is makes life a whole lot easier.
