USC vs. UCLA vs. Berkeley

Being accepted into all 3 I think these are my most realistic choices. What does everyone think?

USC: Good size, large sports, awesome spirit, nice small campus (probably the best of the 3), alumni connections, crappy area, good weather, reputation on the rise, yet not Berkeley, LA, or Stanford quite yet, seems fun, best women

UCLA: Beauitful beautiful school, best weather, nice surronding area, very big size, big but beautiful campus, large sports (not as succesful as SC and most facilities are off campus, Rose Bowl), great reputation, seems fun, pretty good women

UC Berkeley: Best reputation of them all, very big size, beautiful campus (better organized than LA but not better organized than SC), crappy yet interesting area, big time sports getting better every year with all facilities on campus, close to SF (good or bad thing?), seems like it would be least fun of these 3, most competitive for sure, student body may be odd, I heard they have the second worst women behind Stanford

What do you guys think? I just gave a summary of the three schools from my knowledge and what I have heard. I’m looking to major in a science/nueroscience and maybe a minor in psychology/philosophy and probably go into medicine. I’m looking for an amazing student body where people aren’t completely into the grade and filling their resumes but look outward instead of inward and think about the bigger picture. An intellectual student body with goals set is an ideal environment (good women wouldn’t hurt either).

I was accepted into all 3 with an open major and accepted into the Honors College at UCLA (not quite sure what this is yet). I also received the Presidential scholarship from USC which pays for half-tuition. But I’m not sure if I could give up UCLA and Berkeley for SC which might be at the same level academically yet.

What do you all others think who are making this same decision?

Emory is also an out-of-state option…

dood, my friend goes to UCLA and says you don’t have a name, you become a number. UCB…well i went there to check it out, for some reason is it me or is it always gloomy.
well my USC, their campus is getting better every year. Their reputation is going up and what you call a crappy area reputation is being cleaned up bother by L.A and USC. Saftey, you shouldnt worry. Saftey is number one priority for them.

to me…it depends on your major. well…but the bad thing about USC is the tuition.

I got offered half tuition at USC, but I think it’s still a lil more pricey than UCLA with room and board.

I have the same problem! i am deciding between USC UCLA and berkeley.
my major is biology with a pre med track. i was only offered spring admissions for USC. how does berkeley compare with UCLA these days?

You seem to imply that you already set your eyes for USC, so you should just go for it. Personally I’m not a big fan of USC, just cause they’re food sucks and its location (nice school colors though). I also got into all three of those schools too and it costs the same for me to attend either three (USC gave a generous package) but I chose UCLA. If you just want to choose a school based of rankings UCLA or UCB would be best. Despite what others say about USC rankings, I remind people to stop just staring at the USNews rankings, try comparing from NRC rankings and timeshighereducation; USC loses by a landslide in both prestige and ranking in general. Seeing how you’re on premed route, UCLA would be advised due to the fact UCB is known to literally kill your GPA (unless you like a challenge of course then UCB would be best). Quite frankly I forget what is good about USC which is why I can’t seem to support the school, the horrible food there was already a deal breaker for me when I was deciding which to go to.

In Southern California, the three schools all have about equal reps. On the East Coast, USC doesn’t register for academic acclaim. Head to Europe and find Berkeley has the same reputation of the top Ivies.

Parts of UCLA campus are beautiful. Berkeley has the old school feel. USC feels like new money.

Half tuition scholarship gets you into the range of in-state.

UCLA on the way back up in football and basketball. Berkeley has an expensive, remodeled football stadium with alums demanding a better team. USC keeps making football news for the wrong reasons. USC looks to Florida for a basketball coach with two years head coaching experience - huge gamble.

USC isn’t the MD producing machines that UCLA and Cal are. But USC will be less competitive and rigorous in premed type majors, so you might find it more to your drive to study. If you do well anywhere, you’re chances of gaining a m-school spot would be ~ the same.

And you really must get out if you think USC has ‘the best women.’ I used to pick up a friend who was attending USC for grad school, and I wasn’t impressed.

LADodgers22, you can’t lose. I have one daughter at USC who loves it and another who is trying to make the same decision you are but who is leaning toward UCLA because it just feels like the right fit for her. My only concern about the UCs is whether she’ll be able to get the classes she needs and sufficient attention from her advisor. At USC neither have been an issue. I guess my advice would be to go where you feel you have the best fit. Four years is a long time, there are many stresses, and ultimately you want to be happy. Good luck!

And, btw, I’m always amused by all of the (presumably) male posters who are obsessed with how hot the women are. Are you guys hot? Hrm.

^^ haha

My advice: please go to USC. You sound like a bro, so it will be a good fit for you.

I think your descriptions are accurate. Pre-med is going to be tough anywhere.
Sounds like you’ve visited all the campuses, right? Did any of them really click with you?

I assume from your username that you probably grew up in Socal. I did as well, and I found Berkeley and the Bay Area to be a very refreshing, intellectual environment. I will not deny though that the women at UCLA and USC are much more attractive.

Emory may be the best bet for pre-med…smaller environment with more care and feeding. However, the school is seriously lacking in sports and school pride. Atlanta is also not an L.A. or S.F.

“I’m always amused by all of the (presumably) male posters who are obsessed with how hot the women are. Are you guys hot?”

I went to USC and like to consider myself a sexy beast.

Simba9, I’m impressed. Impressed and maybe a little scared. ;)

Does anyone realize the original post is from 2005? To all new posters, please do not open up old thread. Please create a new thread with your queries

^ lol! :-/

haha

I just searched his posts, and he went to USC!
