<p>Recipients of the Huntsman Award are honored for Excellence in Marine Science. Dr. Katrina Edwards of USC Dornsife was awarded the 2012 award for her pioneering oceanographic research which focuses on the microbiology of the biosphere that lies beneath the ocean floor. Dr. Edwards is only the third woman to receive the award in the foundation’s history.</p>
<p>At Dornsife she is the Director of the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations. She also heads the U.S. National Science Foundation Fe-Oxidizing Microbial Observatory Project. Professor Edwards came to SC from the Woods Hole Research Science Oceanographic Institution.</p>
<p>Ms. Edwards earned her Ph.D. in geomicrobiology.</p>
<p>Dr. Thomas Jordan has received the 2012 Geoscience Award given by the American Geoscience Institute. At Dornsife he is the Director of the USC Earthquake Center and also holds the position of Chairman of the International Commission on Earthquake Forecasting for Civil Protection.</p>
<p>Dr. Jordan has received other honors, notably the Lehmann and Macelwann Medals. He is a member of the American Association of the Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.</p>
<p>Professor Jordan is a University Professor and holds the Keck Foundation Chair in Geological Sciences. He came to SC from MIT.</p>
<p>The name should have read “Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution”.</p>
