The answer to this is probably out here, but after a few minutes of searching and reading threads it seemed easier to just post the question. We filled out the FAFSA for the first time this year, and D has been awarded $1,000 per semester in Federal Work Study Capacity. She has a job lined up on campus next year with a department that is a Work Study job, and likely will earn less than the $2,000 total.

My question is about whether there are any restrictions or verification of what she spends the money on. She takes care of her spending money and books, and also is trying to bank some money so she can take an unpaid internship at least one summer (so may have housing expenses that summer, or just need the previously earned $$ for the next year’s spending money & books). All the FWS sites I have read talk about using the FWS funds for “educational costs”. Are there restrictions on using the money as spending money or banking some of it if she can? I didn’t see any references to anyone checking up on this once the student is paid, but thought it best to ask those with more experience.
