Used bathroom fixtures?

We have been slowly remodeling our bathroom, and have an old toilet that is one of the first watersavers, but doesn’t work very well. Our neighbor extensively remodeled his house 2 or 3 years ago, but because of back problems is replacing the standard height Toto toilet in one bathroom with a taller model.
This is the old one.

I asked him about it, ( since I noticed the new one sitting in his driveway for a few days.)
I was interested in it, since it seems to be a better fixture than what our budget would generally allow, but was wondering if there was some concern I wasn’t thinking of.

I guess it is ok to use it. are you concerned about infectious disease or safety or just it being a little awkward using your neighbors used toilet in your house?

I’m not squeamish, but it does seem a little weird. He mentioned he was going to sell it, before I said that we were going to get a new one.

I would take it in a heartbeat. But then again, when money is tight… A little clorox and a good wipe down should make it just like new. If you feel really weird then buy a new toilet seat. Voila! new toilet.

We purchased two new Toto toilets when H was going through Radiation treatment and then bought a “bidet” toilet seat to help with things “back there”. We put our old toilets up on Freecycle and gave them to a woman who had seven kids. One of those kids broke her toilet when he was playing in the bathroom. Talk about weird…

I would take it! Unless you don’t use any public toilets (including at work) you probably share a toilet with lots of people every day, as it is.

Lol, I was going to say the same thing as acollegestudent. It sounds like a good deal - your neighbor quickly unloads a piece of unwanted yard art, and you get a quality toilet for less than a piece of crap toilet from HD. You will need to get a toilet install kit (wax ring etc.), and you will be good to go.

The only thing I can think of is to make sure it fits. Are the rough in sizes of the two toilets the same? Is the bowl shape different (bigger) on the new toilet, and if so, will you have enough room? We have a quirky old house and both of those things were issues when we replaced our toilets.

Yes, make sure that the rough in size is correct! CC has been funky today again, and parts of my posts (or even whole posts) do not post. MeasureX7, cutX1!

 You can even just hose it down in the backyard after a good scrubbing with a bleach product while wearing rubber gloves if squeamish. Definitely get a new seat–seems like that would be a good expenditure.

Fine with me, I replaced an old toilet with a water saving Toto toilet from a neighbor who was redoing a bathroom.

I would take it, too.

MY in-laws just had to replace theirs with a tall model and I said why didn’t you tell us - we would have taken it! Their plumber just took it away.

Make sure nothing is lodged or wedged inside neighbor’s old toilet bowl before installing in your bathroom. My uncle had a toilet that wouldn’t flush right even after he snaked the dickens out of it. He was super mad and frustrated and finally just yanked the toilet out and was so mad about the toilet job he had to do messing up his weekend he took it out in front lawn and cracked it open with a sledgehammer to see what was causing problem. A plastic toy car one of my cousins flushed down in the toilet was stuck way inside in the bum toilet bowl.

This reminds me of a friend’s sister who replaces toilets when she buys a previously owned house. I thought that was the strangest thing I had ever heard. Freaks her out I guess using someone else’s toilet.

Does she replace kitchen counters, carpets/pads, and fridges? Those would be on my hit list if I were a germaphobe:

@lizard LOL… We had the same problem. It was my DD’s cell phone. We had three different plumbers snake it. They assured us there was nothing in the way. When we redid the other bath with a comfort height toilet we switched the perfectly functional one we were taking out for the problem toilet. Yep, it was the cell phone, stuck way up in the bend.

Only issues I’m aware of with a toiler being moved is whether there’s a crack at the base which might leak water and if the gasket for the tank is tight. The latter is pretty easy to replace anyway but sometimes bases crack where the bolts attach to the ring and the floor. Easy to see.

I would look at how it’s installed to make sure it will work with your plumbing/space size. I know it sounds strange because you would think that they all fit the same… but in our house when I purchased 2 new nice toilets for the upstairs bathrooms. In the one bathroom it just wouldn’t work/fit however a regular cheaper toilet fit fine…

We sold a toilet and pedestal sink on Craigslist a few years ago. They just weren’t our style but worked fine. We and the buyers felt a little odd with the unusual sale but everyone was happy.
