USH - Tariffs confuse me. HELP

okay sorry if this sounds stupid. but this is the one part of history that truely confuse me.

but what is a protective tariff? exsice? etc

and can someone go through the tariffs that are important to remember, what they were, and who opposed them and why

ex: tariff of 1816, 1824 etc

I JUST DONT GET IT

tariffs are just taxes on imports and excise taxes are tax on everyday stuff

an important one to remember is the tariff of 1828 = tariff of abominations (during Andrew Jackson’s presidency)

Wikipedia:

The goal of the tariff was to protect industry in the northern United States from competing European goods by increasing the prices of European products. The reaction in the South, particularly in South Carolina, would lead to the Nullification Crisis that began in late 1832.

Faced with a reduced market for goods and pressured by British abolitionists, the British reduced their imports of cotton from the United States, which hurt the South. The tariff forced the South to buy manufactured goods from U.S. manufacturers, mainly in the North, at a higher price, while Southern states also faced a reduced income from sales of raw materials.

South Carolinian Senator John C. Calhoun strongly opposed the tariff, anonymously authoring a pamphlet in December 1828 titled: The South Carolina Exposition and Protest in which urged nullification of the tariff within South Carolina.

By 1860, when South Carolina became the first state to secede, the state was more internally united than any other southern state.

moonisdown, thanks so much for the info the tariff of 1828!

so protective tariffs are only on imported goods coming from out of the United States
